Ch. 1 Face Of Hope

Maggie POV

As the building falls over the wall, crushing it, my hopes fall further and deeper into despair. Dust moves through the town like a cloud, and I loose the sight of the green balloons Glenn had released as a sign to me of him being alive. I yell "Rick!" Suddenly low familiar groans fill the air.
Walkers.
I look around wildly not being able to see anything. I pull my gun off my shoulder and run away from where everything has just happened. Away from the walkers, away from Rick and others,
Away from Glenn.
I run through the dust, lost and not knowing what I might run into. Then I run into a body and listen to a loud thud hit the ground. I point my gun and click a bullet into the barrel and a voice yells "don't shoot! Don't shoot!" It's Father Gabriel. I point my gun back down and start to cough. I say "I can't see anything. Can you?" He answers worried "barely. What happened?" I answer "the building next to the wall fell down. Glenns alive! He released the balloons!" He exclaims "how are you sure" I answer "because I know. Come on we need to get out of here. Help me find the others." I feel a hand grab mine and I ask "whose hand?" Michonne answers "I was about to shoot you. Maggie?" I say "yeah. Is anyone else with you?" She coughs and answers "yeah. Carl and Judith" Carl asks "have you seen Carol, Daryll, or Gabriel?" I say "Gabriel's on the ground right here. I haven't seen Carol or Daryll. What about Rick?" Michonne says "fighting off walkers to warn the others." I reach a hand down to help Gabriel up, it takes him a moment to find it but he finally grabs it. I say "alright here's the plan. Michonne, you, Carl, and Judith grab one of the semi trucks. Start driving through here and if you spot someone have them get in the back. Gabriel, you and I will help Rick." The dust is starting to clear a bit, enough for you to see a foot in front of you. Michonne stands in front of me, she nods and says "got it. Let's go." She races off, Carl holds Judith and follows after her. I start to load my rifle quickly and ask "Gabriel do you have any weapons?" He moves in front of me and shakes his head. I pull a machete from its holster and hand it to him. "Do you know how to use this?" I ask. He answers "a bit. Carl and I have been working on that" I hear a scream, a woman's. I run into the dust cloud, it's less thicken now and run back towards where the building collapsed. I start to hear the dragging footsteps of many walkers, and the groans. I call back to Gabriel "if anything grabs you, stab it. If the reactions a living persons, stop" I don't get a response. "Gabriel?" I call back. He calls up to me "ok" we stick to the wall of the house as we move fast up it. I hear the sound of a machine gun being shot through the air suddenly. Bodies of the dead start to hit the ground in front of us. I yell "don't shoot us!" A voice tells back from the watch tower "get out of there! There everywhere!" It's Spencer's, Deannas son. I hear a loud scream, Gabriel's. He yells "Maggie!" I run towards where I heard it and see Gabriel, with 3 walkers biting into him. I shoot one in the head, and then another. The third one Gabriel takes care of, stabbing it in the head with the machete I provided. I crouch down next to him and he says "there's no saving me from this now" he's been bitten on the foot. He says "shoot me. Don't let me become one" he puts the machete in my hand, and wraps my fingers around the handle. I say "no. No. I-I can't." I take off my belt wrapping it around his knee, getting ready to amputate it. He grabs the belt, yanking it away. He says "I've already betrayed you I deserve it." I say "I don't care what you said about us! I was there in the staircase when you talked to Deanna! I don't care! If there's a way to save you I'm going to try!" He says "I'm ready to die Maggie. I'm going to a better place. Because where we're living now, earth, it's hell. Please" he pulls the barrel of my gun towards his head and says "just get me to that place." I bite my lip and ask "Gabriel I can-" he raises his voice "don't make me get you killed to! I don't want to live anymore. Shoot me or become one of them!" He points the walkers approaching us. I look at his eyes and then shoot him. His head blows in half, blood shooting at me. It hits my face and splatters my clothes. I hold back a sob, and stand up. Spencer starts to shoot the walkers approaching us. I pull my belt back around my waist and, run away from his body. I run around where walkers are flooding in, and the crashed building. I look ahead at the building I'm going to get inside of, where Rick and the others are. Walkers stand in the way. I run towards them, using the little ammo I have left shooting them. I finally reach the porch, stopping for a moment to breath. A walker knocks into me, sending me to he ground and toppling on top of me. My gun is trapped between us, and my hands are holding its arms, and face away. I yell "Help!" The door opens instantly and someone stabs it in the head. It collapses on me and I roll it off. A hand reaches down helping me up. I reach for it and get up. I go into the house and see people. Rick stands at the door. He asks "have you seen Carl and Judith?" I nod and breath heavily. Leaning down and putting my hands on my knees. I walk over to a chair and collapse into it. I say "there with Michonne. Getting a truck that's going to pick up anyone who's alive." I glance around and see Carol, Ron, Deanna, Sam, Jessie, Aaron, Olivia, Tara, Rosita, Abraham, Eugene, Sasha, Morgan, Tobin, Scott, David, Barbara, and Kent.
No Daryll, Enid, Or Glenn.
I ask "where's Daryll?" Rick looks from the eyehole of the door and looks around. He says "where'd Daryll go?" Carol smirks and says "snuck out while you were helping Maggie. Said he was gonna find Enid and Glenn." Rick yells "you've got to be kidding me!" And kicks the door. Jessie lets go of Sam, and gets up moving to Ricks side, mumbling some reassuring words. Then silence. Deanna breaks it and asks "did you see Spencer?" I look over to her, almost everyone does, and I answer "he's shooting walkers in the guard tower" then there's thudding on the door, and I hear Rosita curse under her breath. Abraham says "Rick we need to get out of here" Rick looks to the door and replies "yes. We do. Alright listen up everyone. The way out is through either the hole in the wall crawling with walkers or the gate, which had walkers in its path and is across the city." I say "I have a plan Rick." He looks to me, I stand and say "mind me announcing it?" He says "go ahead" shrugging. I stand next to him and say "alright. We have Michonne driving a semi around. I instructed her that we'd meet her at the gate in 30 minutes." Rick says "anyone object to this? No? Ok. Everyone ready?" No one says anything, Jessie moves over to Sam and Ron. She says "Sam. Get on my back." Sam jumps up and she nods to Rick who opens the door. Loading his pistol he runs out first firing at walkers. I run out next and everyone follows behind. The dust has cleared now, and I see everything. I suddenly in the hole see Walkers falling and dying. Then out of the hole in the wall I see him.
