I wrote in my small blue notebook I carried everywhere, along with my other school supplies and a sketchbook.
"Which then changed into a hope.... Doesn't sound right..." I muttered, looking down at the poem. I shook my head and erased it. "Which then turned into a hope? No no no... which then grew into a hope? Yeah, I like that..."
I looked up from my spot on the floor at the passing students. I was always a loner, always quietly writing or drawing in the back. I kept up my good grades, and didn't really have any friends at school.
The shrill school bell rang throughout the foyer, and I stood up with a groan. 5 minutes to get to class. Great.
I grabbed all my stuff and headed towards the staircase that would lead me to the upper level of Cooper High School. I rounded the corner and crashed into a tall mass of black.
I squeaked and fell to the ground, my stuff flying everywhere. I hurriedly grabbed my notebook and book bag, but couldn't find my sketchbook anywhere.
"Looking for this?" I looked up into a pair of bright and curious amber eyes. I then noticed the eyes were attached to a girl with long black hair, olive skin, and she was wearing all black.
I nodded and stood back up, taking my sketchbook. I ran off before she could say anything else, too embarrassed to even apologize. If I talked it would only make everything worse. I ran into math class and took my usual seat in the back corner. I brushed my red hair out of my face and pulled out a note sheet before looking up at the board.
Mrs. Mueller was writing something on the smartboard in the front of the classroom. When she pulled away, I froze. Those two words she had written terrified me. 'Partner Project'.
The final bell rang, and I looked down at my sketchbook while Mrs. Mueller took attendance.
"Alright students. Today we start our summative assessment." Groans from all over the room sounded. "I know I know, I'm a cruel teacher that hates you all. I've assigned your partners, and together you're going to make a presentation on parent functions and how we modify them to find different things."
She went on about the details, but I tuned her out, instead choosing to continue my poem in my sketchbook.
"-final partners are Ashbel and Skylar." I looked up at my name to see all eyes on me. I squeak, and hide my face within my book. "You have until next friday to finish. Good luck."
I heard a bunch of talking from the other students, along with some moving desks. I looked up from my sketchbook to see the amber eyes once again.
"So I guess we're partners?" The girl asks, a smug grin on her face.
"P-partners?" I whisper nervously. Maybe I should've payed more attention.
"Yes, partners. For the project. I'm Ashbel, but call me Ash." The girl swings a desk around to face me, and takes a glance at my notebook. "You write?"
"Just... poems and whatnot... nothing too great..." I mutter, blushing lightly. I hate when people ask if I write. Obviously, if you're asking if I write, I DO WRITE!
"Can I see?" She asks. I reluctantly flip to one of my better poems. I didn't have a name for it, but it had a nice rhythm and sound to it.
"It's alright, you're ready for the night, of your life, the stars will shine so bright, they say, we're dancing the stress away. Interesting..." She reads on a bit further while I look over the rubric for our presentation Mrs. Mueller had handed out.
"You know, add some amazing music and this would be a rocking song," Ash comments.
"I... I don't listen to much music."
Dead silence. Then.
"Let me see your chromebook."
I hand her the chromebook our school gave to every student, and she plugged in a flash drive. In about 10 seconds she pulled it out again. "There. Listen to those songs, then you'll understand me."
I shrug. "Can we just... do the project?" I ask softly. She nods, and together we work on the best damn project you'll ever see. Possibly. I'm like 99.5% sure. Okay, nothing over a 98%. There's always room for improvement, which is why I'm holding out for 100%. Because I am worth it.
The bell rang for the end of class about halfway through the title slide. Thanks Mrs. Mueller for giving us time to work. *Sarcastic claps*
I grabbed my stuff and packed up, ready to bolt. The only thing that stopped me was a hand on my arm.
"Slow down rabbit. Sheesh, you act like I bite. I only bite my sister," Ash comments, smirking. I pull away from her grip and walk towards the door. "Hey, wait up! We need to talk about the project!"
I turn to face her, having to look up a bit to see her eyes. "Look, Ashbel... I don't work with people well. I have what you call 'severe social anxiety', which makes it hard for me to talk with people. So... can we just do the project on our own?"
"Nonsense. We shall work together, and make this project amazing! Now, can you hang out after school?"
I look down at my hands. "W-well... my mom would probably say no..." Please accept my BS excuse.
"Text her to ask then!" Dammit. I pull out my phone and notice her reading over my shoulder. I pull away and type in my password. She then reads my text. 'Hey mom, can I go to a friends house after school?'. I send it and hope she doesn't answer.
'Of course you can sweetie! Have fun!'. Dammit!
"Awesome! I'll meet you outside of school after 8th hour." With that she takes off to class. I shake my head and head to science class, where I once again sit in the back corner and I say nothing.
After school I walk out the doors to be greeted by those eyes again. She stares down into my soul, smirking. "Let's go on an adventure!" She grabs my wrist and tugs me to a blue car parked right in front of the school.
"Hey dad, this is my english partner Skylar. Skylar, say hi to my dad."
I look at the man in the front seat. He has salt and pepper hair, a kind face, very prominent eyebrows and a bit of a crooked nose.
"Why hello Skylar. You can call me Dave." He smiles and turns back around to drive. Ashbel crawls into the back seat right next to me. I scoot away a bit and lean against the window.
This is gonna be great... I can already tell.
