"Hello?"
"Agent Boneck." I heard a voice, and it sounded familiar, but I couldn't place it.
"Who's there?"
I tried to sit up, but found I was strapped on down on my back. Then it dawned on me: I was on Floor 0.
"You don't recognize me?"
A man stepped out of the shadows. He had vibrant, longish brown hair and brown eyes. And I knew him all too well.
Andrew.
"I... I thought you were dead." I stammered.
"Then you're an idiot." He answered quickly.
He grinned evilly and grabbed a knife from a nearby table.
I was desperate, but I did all I could to remain calm.
"Andrew. Andrew!" I said his name louder. "You have to remember me!"
He moved towards me, but I couldn't move away, his knife aimed towards my skin.
I let out a shout as the tip of the knife touched my skin. I felt the cold blade cut into my flesh.
"Jason! Jason!"
The room around me began to shake. I looked to Andrew's face, who was behind me, and was taken aback. His face was twisted into a deathly shape. Where the skin used to be, his face was made of blood and bones, blood spurting out of the veins.
"Jason!"
"Three weeks." Andrew's skinless face growled.
"What?" I asked.
"Jason!"
"Three weeks. Until you're like..."the face turned and looked at me.
"Until you're like ME."
"No!" I yelled. I felt a drip of water on my head and looked up.
Then a huge wave of water came from the ceiling onto me.
I woke, sputtering and spitting water.
"Are you okay?"
Kyle was sitting on the edge of my bed, holding his blue plastic water bottle.
"Uh..." I finally understood. It was a dream.
"You kept yelling Andrew's name."
"Oh...yea...it was just a dream."
"Are you sure you're okay?"
I nodded and laid down.
I felt Kyle move away from me.
"Jase?" Kyle asked as I heard him pull the thin scratchy blanket over himself.
"Yea?"
"I've been wondering something for a long time... and... well..."
"Come on, Kyle. I think we can tell each other anything. Spit it out." What did he have to say?
"Are you a Special?"
I fought with myself for a few seconds. Part of me wanted to lie to him- I'd be saving my hide and his own if I didn't tell him. The other part of me wanted to tell him the truth- General Stewart already knew I was a Special, and there wasn't much more I could do to stop him. He could do what he wanted with me. Still unsure of which statement I would tell him, I cleared my throat.
"I'm a Special."
There was a long silence (which means it was probably only a second or two) before he took a breath to reply.
"Cool. I think Mom and Dad had it."
I sat up quickly.
"What? Why?"
He sat up and smiled. "Because so am I."
I swung my legs over the side of the bed. "What?"
"I'm a Special!"
I ran to the other side of the small room and grabbed his shoulders.
"You haven't told anyone, have you?"
He shook his head and laughed. "You don't think I'm stupid, do you? I wouldn't tell anyone, its way too dangerous! Besides, you know the genetics of Specials, right?"
I shook my head. "Never really looked into it."
"Okay." By then, Kyle was sitting on the bed next to me.
"So," he began, " having the Special gene is genetic mutation-"
"Well, yea, I know that." I interrupted.
"Shut up." he said sternly but jokingly. "However, there is one line that goes way back that actually had the recessive Special gene."
"So its genetic?"
"For .01% of Specials, and you know how small the ratio is of Specials. The line that went back was traced to have a last name of Boneck."
"What? "I stuttered. "That's our last name."
"Exactly!" he exclaimed. "Don't you see? It's carried on the Y chromosome, so only males can get it. Which is why the name was Boneck, and still is Boneck. It all makes sense!"
"So...if we have the genetic trait..." I began, deep in thought.
"Then the Agensie is gonna try and get us to pass the trait on..."
We traced our stares to each other's eyes.
"That means constant tests-"
We were standing by then, walking in a circle of thought.
"Needles, lumbar punctures-"
"And sperm donations."
Kyle stopped in his tracks and looked at me.
"What?" I asked. "Sperm donations?"
"Yea. They are probably going to inseminate women, hoping to pass on the trait of Specials."
"Gross." he said.
"Gross." I repeated. Then it hit me. "That's not all they want to do."
"Hm?" Kyle said.
"They want to create a super army of Specials."
"They wouldn't-"
"I wouldn't put it past them."
"You're right." He concluded.
I sat down on the bed.
" Look. We can do it."
"Do what?" I asked.
"Get out of here! Take the Agensie down!"
"What?" I exclaimed. "No way! You don't get what its like if you get caught! It's the worst experience I've ever had. You don't-"
He stopped me.
"IF we get caught. IF."
"You think we can do it?"
"I know we can."
I grinned at him.
"Okay."
"Okay?" he assured.
"Okay! Let's do it!" I exclaimed.
"Yes!" He explained as he wrapped his arms around me.
Our hug was short lived though; it was just awkward... it was nighttime and we were both shirtless....
After our awkward hug, we returned to our beds and fell asleep. I couldn't fall asleep for a long time; I was too excited and nervous.
