"Penny don't!" My Mother pleaded. Bags in hand I headed towards the door.
"I have to." I almost dropped my bag as I tripped moving faster. A pain shot up my arm. A taxi was waiting outside to take me away from here.
"What about Stacey?" She cried referring to my younger sister whom I was once a roll model too. Screaming filled the air but my mother didn't seem to hear it.
"She is better without me! People won't see her as me, she can live a better life without me!" I argued over the screaming.
"She needs you! Your dad and I need you!" Tears were falling down my face like a monsoon. My mothers eyes were brimming too. "No one will remember in few weeks! No one will care!" My mother tried again.
It wasn't going to work. The taxi honked its horn outside the house however it sounded more like a gun shot right beside me. I had to go. Staying here would kill me. It would kill everyone around me. I was a mess.
"I'm sorry mum. For everything!" I pulled the door open.
"Penny don't I love you!" She almost ran to me. I closed my eyes and left the front door of the house. I began to run towards the taxi opening my eyes again and only saw a dead body a few feet from my face.
A scream almost erupted from my crumpled body. The floor was cold and gritty. I was lying in what could only be described as a puddle of blood.
My head was pounding."Penny." Someone whispered and I swore it sounded just like my mum. It was as if it were only moments ago I left. "Penny." They said again.
I looked up to where Luke was slouched in his seat with his eyes shut. I held my breath. He couldn't be dead! He had so much life left to live! He had so much more to accomplish, even I could see that from the little he told me."He's asleep." The person said again. I sighed in relief. I still hadn't moved. What happened? "All he has done is wine and hope that you are okay." They said again. It was a women's voice. I tried to turn and find the voice. "Careful it looks like you hit your head pretty bad when you were pushed from the drivers cab."
The driver. Jason. Izzy. I had a panic attack? I passed out. Did Jason push me from the mini abode or did I fall?
I still couldn't feel my arm however I could feel the blood. My head was thumping and I could feel liquid matting my hair."I want to help you but he warned us not to touch you." She spat "he". Who, Jason? Him? Why?
I couldn't think anything but questions.
Trying to shift myself upright I almost slipped back down in the puddle. It looked like a mixture of my blood and the blood of the lost soul near me. I couldn't look at it. It was my fault it was down there rotting on its own.I wanted to wake Luke but he looked so tired. His chapped lips were handing open. The dark bags around his eyes made him look older than he was. The Bennie was held limp in his hands instead of hanging from the side of his head. It wasn't just taking a toll on me. It was taking a toll on him too. On everyone around us.
I looked round and saw the fragile face that belonged to the voice looking at me. I gave her a sad smile. Her face was scattered with freckles and blonde hair frames her face making her brown eyes deeper with the fringe messily across her forehead. It made her look knowledgeable."He's picking us all of quickly now, he doesn't even blink before shooting someone now." She looked sad. Pained. "Do you know why he is doing it?"
I gently pulled myself up leaning against the wall near her it was cold against my back but more comfortable than the floor."Revenge." I whispered looking at her. "For his daughter, he said its how he is getting her justice. She was hit by a bus." I was quiet. Trying not to make any sound which someone else might hear. I put my finger to my mouth as if to tell her not to say anything. I don't want to get myself into more trouble with Jason.
"Sick, sick man." She cursed him. Mentally I did too. "Part of me wishes he would just kill me already." She shook her head.
"Don't say that." I looked to Luke. "There is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Even if you can't see it yet."
She nodded lightly and curled into her seat. I looked out of the window where she was looking. Out in the distance the sun was coming up. It lit up a small part of the sky, it had a slight purple tinge in the morbid black sky.
I slowly stood moving back towards Luke and the seat I've occupied for the past 15 or so hours. Not wanting to wake sleeping beauty I stepped over him letting myself down onto the crusty seat.
Without anyone noticing Jason was stood before us as if he were a King.
He cleared his throught to get out attention. Everyone looked up suddenly like children caught red handed drawing on the walls. He lifted his arm.
Shot.
And walked away.
