Lesley

It was quiet, besides the quiet giggles and hushed voices underneath the sheets. She traced the floral design of her soft sheets with one hand as the other clutched the phone close to her ear. Her lips stretched from one corner of her face to the other, making her eyes squinty.

Her eyes would flutter closed for a brief second before she heard his voice through the speaker in her phone which kept her awake.

"Favorite color," he asked.

"Lavender," she answered tracing the purple petals on her sheets.

"Favorite book."

"Looking for Alaska," she said closing her eyes remembering each word and part of the book. It was the type of book that you had to keep reading to fall in love.

"Favorite song."

"The judge, My turn. What is the favorite movie of Charlie Rios?"

"Hmmm too many to choose from."

"Ok, favorite food."

"Anything Spanish."

She smiled, "your favorite moment."

The line became quiet, the only audible noise being the slight static of her flip phone.

She bit her lip slightly awaiting his answer.

"Too many to count."
~~~
Lesley adjusting her high waisted acid washed jeans on her waist. Lazily wiping the sleep from her eyes, she almost regretted staying up all night on the phone with Charlie. Almost.
She hated how cheesy she was becoming, but she couldn't help it. Everything was great, everything felt great. Walking down the halls didn't seem so boring anymore, because now, there was a certain someone who she was excited to see.
Her white vans were untied causing her to trip once in a while, and her hair was huge from not wrapping it the night before. stepping aside she bent down on the clean floors of the bustling hallway to neatly tie her shoes in a bow. various brown spots loitered the white facade of the shoes from clumsy teenagers and muddy sidewalks.
The light in front of her dimmed and the smell of cologne, cologne that she was oh so fond of took over her senses. Lesley looked up surprised to see dark jeans and black doc martins directly in front of her.
"Hey," that accent was awfully familiar and the sight of his crotch only a mere feet away from her made her shriek in shock which was rewarded with an amused laugh from Charlie.
Charlie
The small frazzled girl in front of him made him smile. without thinking, he reached out his hand to smooth a piece of hair sticking out behind her ear. his hand lingered trailing down to her jaw before he  retracted it placing it to his side.
"Hi," Lesley said peering down at the ground.
They stood there without saying a word, but not the type off wordless staring that was awkward; In fact, they stood there for  a little while no words exchanged.
suddenly, she began rummaging through her backpack finally pulling out a black book that had smoke on the cover and the words 'Looking for Alaska' printed on the front.
she outstretched her hand offering the book to him, "I thought maybe you'd like to read it. it's one of my favorites."
"Thanks Les," he responded smiling small while staring at the cover of the book. Once he looked up he found her eyes already on him which made him smile more. And blush, blush a lot actually.
"um I've never had Spanish food, well authentic Spanish food at least," she fumbled with her fingers, breaking the silence.
Charlie smiled folding his arms while leaning on the locker beside him, "We'll have to fix that now won't we?"
he had a cheesy grin on his face and made his accent more prominent.
"Sí."
---
Charlie walked into the cafeteria immediately looking for his girl. She sat alone with her head stuck in a book. she was by the window where the afternoon light shone against her making her skin glow a hue of gold and her hair shimmer a streak of silver.
"Charlie man, wats up?"
He looked to his side seeing Justin Folley, he was Eagle's Crest starting point guard on the basketball team. Justin was one of the jocks as Lesley said, who sported a varsity jacket that was green and black, their school colors. Justin had a high top haircut with a mike tyson part and deep brown skin. He was a nice guy, at least to the people he knew; almost all the girls at Eagle Crest liked him, the almost being Lesley.
"Nothing much," they greeted making their way to the lunch line.
"Cool, cool. So your still trying out for guard this season right?" he inquired with a rise brow.
"ah I don't know yet. I have a lot of things on my mind right now," Charlie said scratching his head blatantly staring at the girl sitting by the window. This made Justin follow his gaze to Lesley resulting in him shaking his head disapprovingly.
As Charlie turned his head, his noticed Justin's expression change drastically. His lips were pulled in a thin line his head moving from side to side. Charlie quickly glanced to Lesley then back to Justin, now completely giving him his attention.
"I wouldn't go there if I were you man."
Charlie's forehead creased and his eyebrows knitted together, "go where?"
Justin moved his head to her direction, "she's all types of weird dude. I mean look at her she never talks to anyone. Just trying to look out," he finalized shrugging.
Charlie decided not to say anything, even though all he wanted to do was cuss him out for the way he even looked at her. But Charlie didn't. He knew that 'just trying to look out' really meant no ones going to give you a second glance once you start hanging out with her. So quietly, he followed Justin in line and mindlessly listened as he rambled on about Chloe Moritz and how much she changed over summer, mostly pointing out her 'sweet rack'.
And Charlie followed him to his table, sitting down with the rest of the basketball guys not having enough strength to look at Lesley who looked continuously over at their table sadly as she watched him keep his head low avoiding eye contact.
So, that's how it went.
Lesley
Riding home on the bus made her want to cry, almost want to cry. for a second, for a split second as the teenagers herded in and she spotted those familiar green eyes. Lesley was expecting him to explain why he didn't sit with her at lunch and apologize for avoiding her for the rest of the day. But he didn't.
No, he walked right past her not sparing her a second glance and sat next to Chloe Moritz. The pretty blond haired blue eyed Chloe Moritz. Then again, she couldn't blame him. What was a guy as attractive as Charlie Rios doing with her, a plain jane.
So, she tried her hardest not to look back at the both of them talking and smiling as she read a page of her tear stained book.
