Charlie

I'm sorry

Were the words written in fuzzy letters on the screen of his phone.

That night lingered in his mind like a bad dream that he couldn't forget.

She was there, actually in front of him. He had almost forgot what she looked like up close, her unruly hair that beautifully shaped her pretty heart shaped face, and her eyes. He loved her eyes, Charlie felt so close to her by locking sights with those beautiful irises. Then, he let her slip away.

They were together, alone. Away from Justin, and Chloe, and everyone else; just them. And he knew things weren't the same between them, they never could be. Words didn't flow and everything felt stuffy, like small-talk trying its hardest to be something more. At that moment he wanted nothing more than to have the happy moments he had with her relived.

Everything went to shit after that, Chloe came in tipsy and all slobbering over him. And he knew he should've pulled away.

'god, why didn't I pull away?!"

But he knew why, he knew that's what everyone wanted, him with Chloe. That was easy, and safe, and he knew no one would look at him funny or say things like, 'Just trying to look out.' Because Chloe was the girl everyone knew, and the girl everyone thought was nice, and the girl who knew a lot of people.

But he couldn't get her out of her mind, Lesley.

So many emotions surged through him as he watched the pretty girl he knew being humiliated in front of everybody, with no one to turn to. Charlie imagined her walking down the cold street with fruit punch all over her crying silent tears as she rubbed her arms.

He closed his eyes at the mere thought of that feeling even more shitty than before. And it was all Justin Folley. He was the one that uttered those words that made him rethink that beautiful girl he had, well thought he had; and it was him that brought tears and humiliation to a girl that didn't bother anyone and read through books faster than you could snap your fingers.

Lesley

I'm sorry

She couldn't remember how many times she read those three words.

'What is he sorry for?'she thought.

Ignoring her, watching as people laughed and pointed, looking away...

He just looked away, like Lesley didn't exist. Like he didn't want to be burdened with what she was feeling. That was what hurt the most of all, the way his eyes darted everywhere around the congested room filled with drunk high-schoolers except for her.

Her thumb slid up and down the side of her red Samsung flip phone as she looked one last time at the message before sliding it closed and stuffing it in her backpack. Lesley opted for the 'I actually tried today' look. Her Uggs were black, her jeans blue, and her sweater purple. Her lips were coated with watermelon gloss, her cheeks rosier, and her eyelashes longer with black mascara.

It had been three day since she walked through the doors of Eagle's Crest. She was completely and absolutely mortified, and she didn't know how she could show her face, seeing as news like that would spread around school like a wildfire. The thing about her school, the town she lived in, was that it was small; so, when the tiniest bit of drama pops up, the people have a way of finding out.
