Prologue

My family and I had just sat down on the small sofa we owned. Emily, my sister, was desperate to turn on the tv to see the quarter quell for this years 100th annual hunger games. My mother, Paisley, and father, Johese, were both shifting in their seats, beyond nervous to see what was to come of this year.

As Emily turned on our tv, the anthem played and President Snow appeared on the screen. He had been handed a wooden box that seemed to be full of cards. He pulled one out, and we all went silent.

"For this years 100th annual hunger games, the quarter quell will be as followed," President Snow looked at the camera for a split second then continued, "Ten tributes will be chosen from each district, both males and females, to participate. All arenas will be made to look like one of our own districts. When the the last two are standing, they will then fight to the death in one larger battle that includes every living participant. Whoever is left standing, wins." The more Snow spoke, the larger his smile got. His smile was so off putting.

The thought of having a 5x higher chance to havung my name pulled was tear hurling. My name was in there 25 times because I needed to feed my family due to my family circumstances. The quarter quell was something I had never heard of before. It was almost like two hunger games in a row. I looked at my sister and I saw the dread in her eyes. She looked at me and closed her eyes. I could tell she was trying to not cry.

"Happy Hunger Games. And may the odds, be ever in your favor." The television went black and the room stayed silent.
