Chapter nine: Alone

I waited, and I waited, but he never showed up. I waited till the last person entered the class and left, but he never came to school. I was starting to think he hardly attended but Wendy pointed out that normally he had a perfect attendance. I was starting to think it was ever since I had come he had been gone, wouldn’t surprise me.

Phoenix hadn’t been in contact at all since he left me at mine a few nights ago, I had to admit, I was worried. Charles was out there and he had promised that my blood would be spilled, Phoenix was the only one with answers to my questions and he wasn’t here. I didn’t even know where he lived to demand my answers.

I sighed slightly as I put my things into my bag.

“What's up?” Wendy asked me as she stacked up her piles of books.

“Nothing just falling behind slightly” I said to her as we walked out the door.

“I'm sure” she said “all you do is stare at the do is stare at the door” I laughed slightly and nodded.

“That might be the problem” I said as Wendy stuffed her things into her locker, I looked inside to see many interesting things, books upon books, yeah, but interesting books, but one caught my eye.

“What's that?” I asked as I picked up the same book I had seen the first day I met her, the book of shadows. It was thick and leather, there was a lock on it but I couldn’t see a hole for a key, it looked important. Wendy shrugged.

“My mother gave it to me before she died, said it was important, so I carry it with me every day” she said taking it from my hands “I never found out how to open it, I’ve tried but nothing works, pulling, cutting, all that sort of thing but the book is stubborn” she said stuffing it back in her locker.

We walked out the doors deciding against going into the canteen, we hadn’t been going there since the whole Isabelle thing. She’d made quite the mess, Chase has been acting fine but I still worry about him, he’s like a brother to me. We sat down on the grass by the tree I had been with Phoenix once before. It was peaceful there; no one could see you and no one could bother you.

“When did she die?” I asked Wendy, she glanced over to me pushing her glasses up.

“A few years back before I came here, heart problems” she said, I looked down, I wouldn’t look at Wendy with sympathy and pity I knew how that look affected people so I kept it to myself.

“I couldn’t imagine how you feel, I mean when Erin died I was still innocent to the world and I didn’t understand, all I knew was I was alive and she wasn’t, she just feels like a dream now when I think of her” I said pulling out a cigarette, I put it in my mouth and lit it, I looked at Wendy and she was smiling at me. “What?” I asked.

“You’ve never mentioned her before” she said, I frowned slightly but then thought about it, I hadn’t ever since the day she died I hadn’t said her name out loud.

“I guess I feel comfortable around you” I answered after thinking about it for a second. Wendy smiled but then her phone started ringing; she looked at the caller ID.

“It’s Victoria” she said and answered it, “Hello?”

I blanked out when she was on the phone, my head started to feel lazy and I rested back against the bark of the tree. Within minutes we were joined by everyone, Micah was holding hands with Victoria, they had started dating not that long back, the geek and the beauty I always thought when I saw them together. They were sweet, he makes her happy I can see that clearly. I smiled up at them both.
