BEEP BEEP BEEP
My arm seemed to know what to do before I did. Reaching over and turning off that stupid alarm. No sooner had I shut it off when I heard Mom call out to me
"Levi! Time to wake up, I'm making breakfast." I guess she could come in handy sometimes, she always did have a nice plate of breakfast ready for me once I found my way into the kitchen. I remember one morning in third grade it was picture day, so after getting me all cleaned up and ready for the day she gave me the biggest stack of chocolate chip pancakes my little self had ever seen. It was also a parenting mistake because then she had to rush to clean me again and change my clothes after I practically smeared myself in syrup and chocolate.
I shoved the blankets off of me, already missing the warmth they gave me. Scratching my chest absently I rummaged through my closet, grabbing a shirt and hoodie with a pair of dark jeans. My next stop was at the shower, where I turned it up so hot the whole room was filled with steam, and it was glorious. Stepping out I rubbed down the steamed window glass and noticed a little stubble on my face, leading to some extra bathroom time as I shaved it away. I never liked facial hair, found it made me look dirty, a clean shaven face is where I got my good looks so that was how I kept my face.
"Levi you're breakfast is on the table!" Mom called again, "I'll be down in a minute!" I called back before asking, "Do you think you can pick me up more razors?" There was a sound of something from downstairs so I just took that as a yes.
A plate of eggs and bacon later and then I'm out the door. The bus stops were just down the road, the bus itself wasn't much to enjoy. Plus it was a cold morning of rain, so I didn't enjoy what turned out to be a twenty minute wait.
I must have fallen asleep after getting on the bus because the next thing I knew I almost missed my stop. "Stop! Wait!" I yelled getting out of my chair, the bus slowed and I hopped off, ignoring the rather rude remark from the grumpy bus driver.
The mud seemed to suction my feet to the ground, my sneakers would never survive this. 'Damn rain' I thought to myself, finally making it to the door. That's when I saw Toby hanging out the front, lit cigarette to his lips. I walked over and he offered me one which I accepted as he lit it up for me and I took a long drag. This was our 'hello', and it was a very silent meeting aside from the sound of our exhaling breaths and the puttering of the rain. The bells were our goodbye, I headed to my morning math class and Toby left for geology. This was my day, smokes with Toby and classes in between.

"Who's up for a burn?" Marcus asked us all as we exited the school building. "You know me man, Mr. Locke has me slicing up steaks today." Damien responded, offering us a half-hearted wave as he headed towards his bike to get to work.
"I'm in." I say, pulling out my phone to text my mom. Joshua took this as a moment for fun, "What's miss Elizabeth up to?"
"Missing me obviously." Marcus chimed in, running a hand through his hair.
"Fuck off you guys. I just gotta let her know I won't be home usual time." I shook my head, I knew they meant well but I also knew what repercussions came from my dad walking out on her. I didn't want the guys to tease her about it long, even if she wasn't there to hear it.
"Marcus you don't even have a car to have a burn with." Toby huffed, shoving his hands into the pockets of his jacket.
"No but, you do, good sir." He said, grinning at Toby. "So you're offering a great time having a burn in a car that's not even yours? No way man." Toby tried rejecting but then the other three of us teamed up on him, pouting our lips and batting our eyes at him until we creeped him out enough to let us get in his car just so we would stop. As we got in the car my phone vibrated in my pocket, text from mom I assumed. When I pulled it out I saw I was right, a simple text saying 'Keep me updated. Stay safe. Xoxo'
"Where to boys?" Toby asked, taking driver seat. Marcus jumped in shotgun and Joshua and I took the back seats.
"West side!" Marcus said, rolling down his window to let his arm hang out. Since there were no objections Toby pulled out the school parking lot and started driving towards West side. It wasn't exactly an exciting drive, West side was just the name of the spot of town with a few strip malls and a neighbourhood or two but, mainly, there were just a lot of trees.
We may have been driving an hour before Joshua piped up, "Look there!" He gripped onto Toby's seat and pointed out the window, there seemed to be a new street being built. It was empty for the most part, but there was one built house and another almost built, with a lot of frames designed for the process of building future homes.
"Looks like we're getting some fresh meat." Marcus cheered, looking around. "Who do you think is moving in?" I asked, a rhetorical question but I did get a response from Marcus. "I don't care who comes as long as I get more cute girls." I rolled my eyes, "You think with your dick too much dickhead." I joked, earning me a middle finger as an answer to my insult.
However we did see some moving trucks in front of a red house. Big white trucks with a green slogan on the side.
"Man, how long has this been around before we discovered it?" I asked, unbuckling to get a better view. "Months I guess, long enough to build almost two houses and have a family move in." Joshua mused, spying on the people coming in and out of the trucks.
"Hey! What're you guys doing?" A man called in a white shirt, big glasses and bushy red hair on his head as he noticed the lingering car.
"Go go go!" Marcus said, sending Toby into a frenzy down the street. I turned round, seeing the men presume their work. 'Wonder who else is gonna be living here' I pondered the thought as we drove away, before turning my attention back to my friends and letting myself enjoy the rest of my time with them before I would have to go home for the night.
