School of the Dead

What was the point of this? I'm already dead, aren't I? I stretched my arms and reached for the pile of papers sitting on the nightstand. What do they even teach here? How to haunt people? I sure hope it's not that. I don't want to haunt people. Well, maybe if I actually read the papers, then I would know.

I flipped through the pages, trying to find some sort of schedule. What? These were normal, everyday classes, just like the ones I had when I was alive. Even dying doesn't get you out of school, I guess. My eyes quickly glanced at the time I was supposed to be on campus. That was in seven minutes! Oh no, I couldn't be late on the first day!

I quickly sprung from my bed and tossed on the school uniform. I washed my face really fast, grabbed my bag and papers, and rushed out the door.

It was a good thing that  I lived in the school dorms, because by time I neared the doors, I was exhausted. It was strange though, when I saw that the school seemed empty. Only a few students stood around chatting. Huh?

"You're here early," a soft voice noticed.

I spun around and saw the white haired girl from yesterday. Crap, what was her name? Tach... Tachaburni? Ah, I can't believe I forgot!

"Early?" I asked, still trying to remember her name.

"Mhm. Class starts in twenty three minutes," she replied.

"Twenty three minutes," I whispered, looking at the paper. "Gah, I must have misread it! I have made such a foolish mistake!"

"It's alright. You're here on time," she pointed out.

"I guess. At least I'm not late," I laughed.

She nodded and I noticed that she had finally smiled, even if it was a small smile.

"President Tachibana," a boy with dark green hair notified her. "You are needed in the Student Council room."

"Yes. I have to go now," she told me.

     "Oh, uh, bye, Tachi...Tachi..."

What was her name again? He just said it! How stupid of me. Yep, that's me. Stupid little Ooyama can't even remember the girl's name. No wonder the other boys would pick on me. No wonder they left me alone to die. I deserved it, didn't I? No, I shouldn't be too hard on myself. It was all just an honest mistake.

So what now? That girl was the only one I knew here. What am I talking about? I don't even know her. I guess the only thing I can do is wait.

                                                                                    ~

"My name is Ooyama. It's a pleasure to meet you all," I greeted with a bow.

Ugh, I've always hated introducing myself in front of the class. I get easily nervous in front of a crowd. Thankfully, this was probably the very last time I'd ever have to do so. I sat in an empty seat in the back of the room.

I hated being back in school, especially when there was no purpose in it. All day long, I've been sitting down in my seat,  ignoring the techers' lectures, and drawing in  an old notebook. I haven't paid attention to any of my lessons at all. If a teacher called on me, I'd be screwed. Maybe if I pulled off a quiet type, I wouldn't be called on.

      "Ooyama San, the bell rang."

"Eh?" I looked up at my last teacher of the day. "Ah, I'm sorry! I guess I got distracted."

"I understand," he said. "Now hurry up."

"Yes sir," I whispered as I stood up to leave the class.

Is this how things would continue? Just like how it was when I was alive? Well, at least nobody messed with me here. Everybody left me alone. They would greet me as I passed by, but that was all. Would I actually make any friends in this world? I doubt it...
