Dreariness caressed Noelle and she wanted to puke when she thought about how foolish and inadequate she was to Charlie. She loved him and he used her like a prop and lied to her.
The house was quiet when she walked in as only her parents were there. Roman and Brady were still at school and would be for the next hour or so. Her mother was making a grilled cheese on the stove and her father lounged on the couch in the living room vertical to it. It was the first time in ages that she'd seen her parents together and not giving each other the cold shoulder or screaming.
"Hey sweetie, come here," her father gestured towards the open seat next to him. Her mother placed the sandwich on a clear glass plate and followed her out to where her father was, handing him the sandwich. "Me and your mom are looking for a babysitter and we were wondering if you could ask-" he began.
"Oh no, I spoke to Serena today. She was at the mall," her mother spoke up.
"Serena?" Noelle cocked an eyebrow.
"You're friends right?" her father asked.
"Well, yeah, I'm just wondering why her? And why do we need a babysitter?" she tucked a brown piece of hair behind her ear, jangling her earring while doing so.
"Well we know her from Charlotte's," her mother shrugged, dodging the other question.
"Why do we need a babysitter?" Noelle asked anyway. They paused.
"Your mother and I decided to get a divorce," he finally spoke.
"What?!" Noelle felt like crying. How much more could go wrong?
"Not right away, sweetie," he tried to assuage her burning fire but it didn't work.
"This isn't fair," she swiped her bag up from the floor and darted up the steps, wanting to escape from everything.
