After a quick discussion, Mel and I chose to move Alec first and talk afterwards. Claire still hadn't said anything and was watching blankly as I lifted Alec's body. She was in pretty heavy shock. Which makes sense since she'd just lost, as Mel had said, her boyfriend of three years.
I carried Alec to the room where Holly had been killed, Mel's hand preventing her from helping. I put him next to where everyone else who'd been killed was. It had basically become the designated corpse room.
Claire refused to even enter the room, instead she waited outside. I was surprised at this point how empty she seemed. Ever since we'd come here she had been full of lively emotions, but she still was yet to have any more. Mel was obviously worried as well, she spoke carefully and quietly to Claire as if she were going to spook her. But Claire continued to seem too distracted to notice.
I figured maybe she would go in after Mel and I left the room. To, I don't know, say her goodbye's or something? But she followed right behind Mel when we left, still keeping her mouth shut.
"So we have about 25 minutes left," I said, we'd returned to the living room and had sat down in the corner away from Gabriel's blood again.
"What are we gonna do?" Mel asked, "she hasn't been taking things seriously up to this point and more than half of us are dead. Is it even possible for us to survive at this point?"
Mel's voice gave away the terror she was feeling, and it looked like she was close to tears.
"Don't think like that yet." I said, attempting to reassure her. "First let's go over what we know."
Mel nodded, swallowing hard.
"So far we know she has split personalities. Adalyn and Elaine. Elaine was the original and the reason she's still 'alive' is because of supernatural abilities she's possessed since sometime before her death." I said, talking as much to myself as to the other two. "Their abilities include something involving energy, presumably both living and electric, and switching between physical and non-physical forms."
"Going on what Alec said before..." Mel glanced at Claire, who probably wasn't actually listening. "They have control over objects as long as they're not in their physical form. Which signifies they might have slightly more of a weakness when in their physical forms. Also, as Adalyn mentioned, we can move freely around Elaine but not Adalyn. She said something about only outputting energy instead of taking any, so Elaine is probably much more reckless than Adalyn."
"So maybe Elaine is the weaker one?" I asked, hoping it were reality.
"Maybe," Mel replied thoughtfully, "we have yet to see her use a non-physical form, so she might not know how."
"That's good then." I said.
"Not really, she's still much more powerful than us. No matter which personality."
We sat in silence.
"Do we have any way to beat her?"
"Well if she's got a physical form we can probably inflict damage. But I'm only speculating."
"Right, so attack before she attacks us is our best bet I guess."
Silence again.
"Elaine would like an apple." A small distracted voice said, I whipped my head around to find the small chestnut haired girl looking at the ground.
This is it, I thought.
"Elaine's come to fix the guests," Elaine said. "The girl in her brain told her to."
Claire reached into her bag and picked something up, her movement surprising Mel and I as much as Elaine had. She moved towards Mel and whispered something in her ear. Mel's eyes widened in shock.
"You want an apple right?" Claire said in a quiet voice filled with venom.
Elaine turned to her and nodded eagerly.
Claire launched a round object out of her hand, hitting Elaine's forehead with a thunk.
"Have a fucking apple!" She yelled, marching past us and towards the clearly shocked Elaine who was pressing her palm against her forehead.
"You kill my boyfriend, my best friend's sister and break my best friend's left hand and think you can just march over here and decide we're the ones who need fixing!?" Claire shoved the small girl down the hallway away from our sight, "what were you planning on doing, killing them too!? You thought we'd just let that happen!? I don't give a rats ass what happens to me, but you sure as hell better not touch them with your little psycho hands!" We heard the bathroom door slam shut and the shouting became incomprehensible.
"What did she say?" I asked the still shocked Mel.
"That the both of us need to get out before she's done."
