He sat in a tree outside, watching the daily life of the student unfold. He couldn't help but twitch at every sound he heard. People would often stare at him, running away at the sight of his bright red eyes. He liked the feeling of their fear. He could cut it right out of the air and breathe it in. Fear, he thought, was a salty treat. Souls sent to The Pit were often very sour, being that they were damned souls. His favorites were the ones of virtue and purity. They were very sweet, but very hard to acquire. Occasionally someone would be wrongly accused, then their soul would be sent to him. They were a rare delicacy, but the best.
He removed his suit jacket and rolled up his sleeves, exposing his arms to the warm sunlight that peeped through the leaves.
"Hey."
He glanced down. It was the girl who had found him a few days ago. How had she found him? She was not a Demon. At least, if she was, it was well hidden. Her life span, which floated above her head, was that of a humans. He blinked the numbers away. It annoyed him when they were always there.
"Mind if I come up?" she asked. He looked down on her, expecting her to dodge his red eyes and walk away, but she was not intimidated at all. She quickly climbed up the tree and took a seat next to him.
He growled softly in annoyance. He didn't like her. He didn't like her at all. She bothered him to no end.
"I'm Ariel, by the way." He looked at her. Ariel was one of the Angels in attendance when he was banished from Heaven. Of course, there was nothing angelic about this girl. She was bothersome, and not as beautiful as an Angel would be. She was cute at very best, even though she was Mortal, therefore hideous to him. Her soul was pure nonetheless. Perhaps he would take it from her. He would most definitely take it from her.
She looked back at him, directly into his eyes.
"So, Liam, where are you from?"
He turned away, unable to answer.
"I'm from Wisconsin." She said rather cheerfully. "I know it's weird that I would come here from so far away, but ya know, it's kind of an adventure. Making new friends and meeting new people. It's fun. Well, it was at first." She shook her head and looked down, picking at the bark. "I've been here for a few months and I haven't made any friends yet. It's hard! I mean, everyone thinks you're weird and not normal. It's like they think you're The Devil or something!"
He looked at her curiously. She had his attention. "Why would you say that?"
She looked up and pulled at the cuffs of her sweatshirt. "Well, nobody likes him for some reason. I mean, it's not really fair. Why should he have been banished from Heaven for loving his dad? Now people blame him for everything. All of us did horrible things to this place and we always, always blame him. Let me tell you, humans suck. They're all jerks. They're self-centered and horribly vain. I hate them. Sometimes I wish I'd just die and fall into Hell where everything's just... Blah."
"Why would anyone want to fall into Hell? That is the most idiotic thing I have ever heard. It is absolutely awful down there, for everyone."
"Well not if you're a Demon."
"Even for them. Especially for them."
"And how would you know that?" She looked at him rather questionably.
"Demons are just damned souls that have been prodded by evil. It's painful for everyone that is sent to The Pit."
"Well I'd still rather go there than to Heaven. I wouldn't get up to Heaven anyways."
"Why's that?"
"I don't believe in all that 'God' stuff. It's ridiculous, and it totally clashes with itself."
