Grade 5. I still remember it like it was yesterday. On the first day, I was scared and yet glad that I could make new friends. I have a new backpack (a chocolate brown with turquoise swirls), binders, and new pencils. I had new school supplies and running shoes. I helped my siblings into the gym, waiting for their name to be called.
The gym was packed; you could hardly move. Name after name. Class after class. I watch as my younger brother was being called up to the front. I was glad to know what teacher he had. It felt like forever when they first called the grade 5 classes.
As the grade 5's were being called up, anxiousness filled me up as everyone that I knew from my old school was going to their new classes. My class was the last to be called. When I heard my name, I walked up and stood in line facing the small crowd, to see who else was in my class. I saw my best friend and some people I knew from my old school standing in line to. I was happy to know that some similar faces I've seen at school were in my class. Mostly my cousin, lets called her Dramatic. I smiled because it was the first time since kindergarten; my best friend and I were in the same class. I was pretty convinced that we weren't best friends anymore, considering how she made many new friends in Seaforth.
As my new teacher was done calling names, we head towards our classroom which was right behind the gym. We hung up our backpacks and gather our school supplies. We had a seating plan. I was sitting in the second last row, second one of the inside of the isle. My "best friend" was sitting in front of me and her friend was diagonally right behind me. Let's call her Brave.
And these three boys. One loves the Boston Bruins, let's call him Bruins' fan. The second one had this curly boyish hair, let's call him curly. And the last one. Ah, the last one. The last one had this long brown hair who loves to wear baseball hats. He had the most gorgeous hazel eyes I've ever seen in my life. Let's call him hazel eyes. His laugh. Ah, the laugh. Whenever he did or say anything funny, it made me laugh so hard. For me, it was like love at first sight.
It was a couple days later and I told this girl I sat beside (let's call her annoying), my best friend, and the girl who sat in the back row with the three boys. I decided to tell him I liked him. In the note, I drew a really good looking rose. I had this whole thing planned out. I would pass it to the one beside me, then she would pass it to the girl in the back row and handed it to him. That completely failed! During lunch, she literally got up and threw the note on his desk. I quickly got out of my seat and grabbed the note out of his hands. I decided to put it in his backpack. The next day, someone told me he was dating this girl that I played soccer with. I was so embarrassed for the rest of the day.
At recess, we started to go to this little garage door opening where they kept the lawn mowers. It was half way through the school year when I started to gain some new friends. When it was snowing, we would huddle in the corner and try to keep warm. When spring and summer came around, Bruins fan, Curly, and Hazel eyes would play this game. It was sort of like red rover but it would be them trying to squeeze in and we would try to squeeze them out. The reason why we did this was it was a sort of like a territory for our group of friends.
When April Fools Day came, Hazel eyes and Curly put about a millions of spiders in and on his desk. I asked him why does he have spiders on his desk. He replied with, "it's April Fools day!" He was so excited about it for some reason. I laughed at his reaction to my question. I shook my head and continued doing my sheets.
Add about me telling my cousin the truth about Halloween and how she still doesn't have a stable friendship outside of ringette.
During the year, I've joined junior choir and a Sudoku club with my teacher. We went to Canada's Wonderland in June. I was so excited to go to Canada's Wonderland, considering it was my first time going there. We wore black pants and a dark green shirt with our school's name on it: "Upper Thames Elementary School." Sudoku was new to me, considering I've seen my papa doing them whenever we've visited them.
As the year drew to a close, I remembered what had happened during my first school year at a different school; funny French classes, passing notes, loud lunches and teachers, new lunch monitors everyday, funny April fools day, new friends. I've laughed a lot that year. It was the best year ever or so I thought.
