{Liam’s POV}
“Come on Liam, there’s probably nothing down here.”
“yeah right..”
I trailed behind Louis as we descended the stairs leading to the basement, nothing about this felt right. Louis had obviously never seen a horror movie.
The first things you learn when watching a horror movie;
1) Do not approach a dark staircase in an abandoned pub/bar.
2) Never descend a staircase in the dark.
3) You will pay for whatever you find in the dark.
“You’re paying for my funeral Louis.” I muttered.
He ignored my comment and continued making his way down the stairs, determined to find out what on earth was lurking down there.
When reaching the bottom, I fumbled for a light switch of some kind, hoping to illuminate the small corridor. My hand seized a chain hanging from the ceiling, I pulled it, hoping for a light somewhere to switch on, but was greeted yet again by pitch black.
I pulled it one more time, harder, but it only resulted in the plaster from the walls crumbling down on me and Louis.
“Nice try mate.” Louis sighed.
“It was worth a shot.” I answered back.
We kept on walking until Louis halted to a dead stop, in front of him was a small window, the kind you find in a prison cell. Its grey peeling paint was enough to send any diy expert to shame.
I watched as Louis suddenly went pale, his pupils dilated in fear. The corridor felt cold, as if all the heat had just vanished.
Louis’ breath fogged up the window as he continued to watch whatever was going on behind the misty glass. I rubbed my arms, hoping for some warmth.
After what felt like hours, Louis uttered something from where he stood.
“Holy crap Liam....”
I didn’t reply, I didn’t need to, when Louis pulled me up to the window my question had resolved itself.
Behind the window was some kind of cell, it was crammed with 30 people at the most, men, women, even small children. You could almost see the fear in that room, the way their heads hung low, and the way their hands shook.
“Liam..what..what is it?” Lousi stuttered from beside me, he looked at me, eyes searching my face for an answer.
“I..I dont know..” I replied.
Truth to be told, I had a faint idea of what was going on, I noticed the same sign that had been branded on the soilder’s hand, had also been branded on many of these people. It was like a holding cell.
“Do you think we can help them?” Louis asked me, still shivering slightly.
“Umm, we could try and break the window?” I replied, although it was probably hopeless, the window looked strong, maybe made from double-glazed glass. There was no way that would smash.
I watched as Louis attempted to break the window by pounding his fist against it, all he achieved was a set of bruised knuckles, and a startled 10 year old looked at him wildly through the glass.
The kid was shaking his head, it looked as if he didn't want Louis to help, like if he did, it would only result in trouble for the many lives in there.
“Louis, I don't think its a good idea trying to break the window.”
“Why?”
“Well, from the looks of that boy in there, I don't think he wants you to break the window.”
