The early morning sun breaks through my window as my meister, Josephina, swiftly opens the curtains in my bedroom. A groan bubbles in my throat as I pull the blanket over my face, shielding the light from my eyes. Morning is the worst part of my day. Suddenly, the warm comfort of the blanket is ripped off of me and I lie there shivering. I open my eyes a little and catch a peek of Josie, fully dressed for the day.  My eyes shoot daggers through her.

"Don't gimme that look, Missy. You need to get out of bed and get ready for our first day. I don't wanna be late to our meeting with Lord Death. Now get moving." She sasses. My eyes roll into my skull in annoyance.

"Fine." my voice sqeuaks out. Josey whips her head around with a face full of surprise on her face. She brushes it off and continues out of my room. Groggily, I slump over to the bathroom. I catch a glimpse of my knotted hair and sleepy eyes in a tall mirror by my dresser. Grabbing my brush, I pull through my rats nest the best that I can. My natural curls frizz in all directions from mt head. When I was younger, I had springy curls like my mom but without her help I struggle with taking care of them.

My eyes scan over my closet untilI spot my favorite jacket. It's black and made of old leather. Josie and I found it at a thrift store a few years ago. After I finish getting dressed, I search my room for my school supplies. I spot my textbook on my floor peeking out from under my bed and a notebook thrown across my bed. Josie yells at me all time for how sloppy I am. She's very neat and organized. In the past, she would try to teach me to be cleaner but it rarely stuck so she gave up.

"Come on Zora! It's time to go!" Josey yells from downstairs. I shove everything in my bag and snatch it up from the floor. I race down the stairs. Josey is already walking out the door. I rush to her side and match her pace swiftly. We begin walking towards the DWMA.

*le time skip*

After what seems like years of walking in dead silence, we finally reach the school. The building itself was exciting and scary all at the same time. I gaze at the amazing towers that stand out against the bright blue, morning sky.  Red spikes shoot out like daggers from the structure along with two giant candles lit with a bright flame that flickers lightly. Three huge skulls sit in a semi-circle around the front entrance. The laughing sun rises from behind the center of the school. The DWMA.

"Wow..." I whisper in awe. Josey breaks from her trance and looks at me, filled with excitement. Josie starts bouncing up the steps like a bouncy basll. I sigh and start walking up a staircase that looks like it holds a million individual steps. Josie begins talking a mile a minute about how excited she is. I fall in step beside her and listen as she pradles on. I definitely more of a listener than a talker especially when I'm with Josie.

"Aren't you excited!?" Josey bubbles. I can practically see her excitement oozing from her pores. I nod my head, smiling while giving her a thumbs up. I honestly am excited, though. This school is gonna turn my life around. Well, hopefully. We make it to the top of the stairs, sweating and panting from the distance and the incline. The muscles in my calves are burning like a blazing bonfire. I bend over and rest my hands on my knees, hoping to catch my breath. I look up to see a pair of round blue eyes and a big smile in my face. I jump backward.

"OH! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to startle you! My name is Patty!" the girl giggles and I smile. She reminds me of Josey. A taller girl walks from somewhere behind Patty.

"Hi. I'm Liz. I'm Patty's sister. Are you the new kids?" I nod. "Welcome to the DWMA! Lord Death asked us to escort you to the Death room to meet him. Come on. It's this way!" She turns around and starts walking to the big entrance doors. I slowly nod, still a bit startled, and start walking behind her and Josie picks up the pace and follows close behind us.
