I wake up to the sound of a heart monitor. I open my eyes and feel a tube going down my throat. Naturally, I freak out, coughing on the tube as the machine starts to beep faster.
A nurse runs in and pushes me back down onto the bed.
"Calm down, Ms. Reaser. You need to calm down." he says. I force myself to calm down. He removes the tape from my face and slides the tube out of my throat. I inhale a big gulp of air, burning my throat.
"Water." I croak. He hands me a cup of water and I quickly drink it. "Thank you."
"Can you tell me your name dear?" he asks, shining a light in my eyes.
"Elizabeth Reaser."
"Do you know where you are?"
"The hospital?"
"Do you know which one?" I shake my head no.
"How old are you?" he asks. I giggle.
"I'm not gonna say that. You're too cute." I say. He chuckles and fills some things out on the form.
"Ms. Reaser-"
"Elizabeth." I say. He smiles.
"Elizabeth. I'm going to do a few routine check ups and then an officer and a detective are going to come in and speak with you." I nod. He checks my respiratory function and removes the wires from my body.
"Where are my friends? My cast mates." I ask him. He looks at me sadly.
"They're just down the hall." he says.
"When can I see them?" I ask.
"Elizabeth, they are still in a coma." I stare at him confused. I came back. Why didn't they?
"Can I go see them?" I ask. He sighs.
"I'll see what I can do." he says, walking out of my room. I rest my head back on the pillow and stare at the ceiling.
Right before I drift off to sleep, my door is opened again. I lift my head up and see two big men walk in. One is dressed in a police uniform and the other is wearing a nice suit.
"Good afternoon Ms. Reaser. We just need to ask you a couple of questions." I nod and they sit down and the man in the suit grabs his notepad and pen from his coat.
"So, Ms. Reaser, do you remember the events leading up to your blackout? Maybe a strange food that you had eaten or a suspicious figure." he asks. I try to remember back to that day.
"No. I was changing and all of a sudden, the room was spinning."
"What had you eaten that day? Was there something that the entire cast had eaten?" he asks.
"No. I had a salad but I was the only one who ate that."
"And you weren't followed by anyone into your trailer?" he asks. I sigh. This guy is annoying.
"No. I wasn't followed and I wasn't poisoned. Can I go see my cast mates now?" I ask. He nods and they rise from their seats.
"Thank you for your time Ms. Reaser." I nod and smile as they leave my room.
I wait for the nurse to come back in and take me to see my friends but he never came. I check the clock and see that it's 3 in the morning.
I rise from the hospital bed and quietly sneak out of my room. I walk down the hallway, looking in every window for a familiar face. Finally, I see Peter's form through a window. I look down the hallway both ways to make sure no one is around before I open the door and sneak in.
I walk toward his bed and see him in a similar state I was in. It's strange seeing him so still. No smile on his face or mischievous look in his eyes. I grab his cold hand and hold it in my clammy one.
With my other hand, I push his hair back from his forehead. His lips are chapped due to breathing through his mouth. I gently touch them with my fingers.
"Wake up Peter." I whisper.
I hear commotion coming from the hallway. I quickly kiss Peter's forehead and rush to the window to see what's happening. I see a group of nurses surrounding a bed. I try to see the patient's face but there are too many nurses. I walk out and try to sneak a peak.
A large nurse moves out of the way and I see a glance of Nikki's dark hair. I stare, stunned, as I watch the nurses try to revive my friend.
"Charge to 300. Clear!" a nurse says as the shock her with paddles.
"Come on. Pull through Nik. Please. Please." I whisper, watching her life slip away. Tears start to form in my eyes as I continue to hear the machine flat line.
"Push one of epi. Charge to 360." the doctor says.
"She's gone, Doctor." I hear a nurse say.
"Do as I say!" he shouts. "360! Clear!"
They shock her one more time and a tear slides down my cheek. It seems as though time stops as everyone in the room freezes, watching the heart monitor.
Beep.
Her heart starts pumping again and I feel my breath rush back into my lungs and I smile. The doctor smiles and the nurses congratulate him. They file out except for a couple nurses and the doctor.
I slowly step into the room and watch as they pump more fluids into her body. A nurse sees me and they stop what they're doing.
"Ma'am. You aren't supposed to be in here." he says. I step back but stay in the room. He walks toward me and gently tries to push me out.
"No." I whisper. I step forward, refusing to leave the room. "No." I said louder and more forcefully.
"I need to stay with her. I need to stay here. Let me stay!" I say, tears running down my face. Another nurse walks toward us with a syringe in her hand.
"Liz?" I hear Nikki croak. The nurses freeze and turn around to see Nikki sitting up, staring at us. I push the nurses away from me and rush to her bedside.
I hug her gently, rubbing her back. I giggle as tears continue to run down my face.
"Thank god." I whisper. I feel her squeeze me tighter before releasing me.
"Ma'am it's time for you to go back to your room." I look at Nikki and smile.
"I'll see you in the morning okay? Don't go trying to die while I'm gone." I say. She giggles and nods. The nurse helps me into a wheel chair and he wheels me toward my room. I look into each room that we pass and look curiously at the patients.
We pass a room and I could have sworn that I saw Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey. I shrug it off, assuming that I'm just tired. We finally arrive at my room and he helps me into my bed.
Before he leave my room, I stop him.
"Excuse me?" He turns around and looks at me. "Is there any way that I could be moved into the same room as Nikki?"
"I'll have to check with my superior. I'm sure you can though. If he says yes then I will move you first thing tomorrow morning." I smile and nod.
"Thank you." He nods and walks out. I shut my eyes and let myself drift away into my dreams.
