"Hi," I said, my heart beating 200 miles per hour.
I was talking to a girl I had liked since the beginning of the school year for the first time; it was the beginning of December now and my friends had basically forced me to approach her and make conversation on this faithful Monday morning. I felt scared and foolish; it felt like she took years to reply.
"Umm...hi," she smiled at me; it was warm.
I looked longingly into her dark brown eyes, complementing her dark brown hair."I know we don't know each other, at all, but I was wondering if you'd want to have lunch, with me," I said, all in one breath. This plan was crashing, and it wasn't a wave.
She looked at me quizzically while I thought about how it would seem if I ran out of the class. But almost everyone was inside and getting seated and I'm sure many were eyeing me, so it would be very embarrassing. My self-esteem hung by a thread.
"Today?" she replied. I almost asked her 'what' then remembered the conversation.
"Yeah...."
"Oh, well, no."
My heart sank. "Oh, it's okay," I said as I walked away swiftly.
"Wait," she called after me. I spun around to see her standing in front of me. She was kind of short, maybe 5'4", she looked taller from afar.
"I can't have lunch with you today, but maybe we could get ice cream at Jo's after school, or just have lunch tomorrow," as she spoke, relief washed over me. I felt like flying; soaring with the birds.
"Jo's, after school, see you then," I smiled so wide she probably thought I was The Joker. She smiled in return.
"See you," she said, then walked back to her seat.
I walked out of her classroom, careful not to glance around, in case she was looking, as my cheeks burned.
As I walked over to my friends I could tell they knew it had gone well.Jack burst into a smile as big as mine. "She said yes?"
"Yes!" I practically squealed. Cheers rang out from all of my friends, who then did an impromptu group hug, which resulted in me being squeezed in the middle and someone's arm being embedded in my ribs.
"So what were her exact words?" Jasmine asked, in her normal shrill voice.
"She said she can't have lunch with me today, but we're going to Jo's after school to get ice cream, or something," I was ecstatic, I could feel it radiating off me.
They cheered once again, and though it was a little embarrassing, I felt happy.
"I'm happy for you," Katie smiled and came towards me, arms outstretched.
I hugged her tightly. She, probably more than anyone, knew how much and how long I'd been pining over this girl.
She let me go after about a minute of squeezing the life out of me; I ended up smelling like strawberries and summer; I don't know how but she just smelt like summer.
After the smiles and congratulations we all went to class, albeit late.
