First Day Back

I woke up at least a dozen times through the night, and had many dreams about her.

Eventually I woke up a little after 5:00a.m. and couldn't go back to bed, so I stared at the ceiling while I waited for my alarm to go off then get ready for school. It was painted blue, to match the sky, and as the day went on, the color changed; becoming darker as night draws near. I used to stare at it a lot when I was smaller and wonder about the world, now it was about a girl.

My alarm went off at precisely 6:02a.m., an odd time to set it but I used to always fall asleep when it was at 6:00a.m. then wake up 2 minutes later, thinking I was late.

I trudged out of bed and got ready for school.

I walked briskly to school; all too filled with anxiety, both to see her and to tell Katie about it, if someone hadn't already.

I arrived at school considerably and unusually early and immediately went to the library because if Katie was here, that's where she' d be.
And yes, she was there.

I walked over to her quickly, admittedly not very silently and got a few looks from the librarian.

"Hey Kate," I said a little too throaty and began coughing.

She laughed. "Hey, how are you? I noticed you didn't text me about how it went. Very disappointing."

I laughed too. "I was waiting until I saw you in person."

"Then what are you waiting for? Spill! Dixon, spill!"

I laughed even harder and caught a dangerous look from the librarian, then sat beside her.

I started to whisper. "So, she said it was a date, and it was amazing, we held hands while I walked her home, it was fun, she laughed at my jokes, we talked, it was great," at this point I was smiling like an idiot and she was giggling like a maniac.

"Wow, that's amazing," she then grabbed me for a weird sideways hug, we both laughed.

"I know right! I feel so happy, I can't wait to see her again, but what if she isn't as excited to see me as I am her?"

She chuckled. "Chill, of course she will be , you're you."

I smiled.

She then checked her watch. "We should get to class."

I helped her pack up her stuff then we went to class.

I had math and once again I was thinking about her. I couldn't wait to see her, we had one period together before lunch and I kept going over what would happen.

Maybe she doesn't talk to me, or notice me.

Maybe she smiles at me then talks to her friends.

Maybe she talks to them about me.

I sensed Mr. Francis was going to ask me a question; I tried to look at the board to see what topic we were doing.

Then boom; saved by the bell. I got up with relief and he eyed me suspiciously.

The next two periods went by slowly, but when the period with her came, my heart beat dangerously fast.

I was practically the first person in class and sat while everyone else filed in.

Jack came in and we did our secret handshake, which we made in middle school, then sat to my left.

He then began talking about his classes earlier and a girl he noticed.

I tried to listen but my mind was elsewhere, I kept glancing at the door and when she walked in, everything faded from focus.

I didn't want to look like the stalker I am, so I turned away and looked Jack in the eyes.

He was shocked for a second; then he saw her and understood.

Then he began smiling at someone behind me, and I turned around.

"Hey Dix," she smiled as she sat beside me.

I was on the verge of having a panic attack. "Hey," I said weakly.

I had to calm down. " Lex , this is Jack, Jack this is Lex ."

They both waved at each other.

" Lex as in Lex Luthor?" Jack asked.

We both laughed, while she looked lost.

"He's a comic book character," I explained.

"Oh," she smiled. "Is that why you called me Lex ? "

I laughed again. "Umm, no, the nickname just popped into my head."

She shook her head at me with a smile.

Then the teacher came in and started her lesson.

I tried to focus but I kept glancing at her, and noticed her glancing at me.

Then she slightly kicked my chair and I looked at her. She past me a note:

Hi

I smiled and wrote a reply and sent it back to her .

She giggled softly and then sent it back.

Hi

Hey there Luthor

How are you?

I scribbled a reply and passed it back.

After passing it a few times it ended up like this.

Hi

Hey there Luthor

How are you?

I'm good, wish we weren't in class. Hbu ?

Same. Wanna get lunch together?

Sure, would love to

Cool!!

Lol . Why aren't you sitting with your friends today?

Because I'm sitting with you silly

Ohh lol

Because I like you

At that point, Jack kicked my chair and I saw Mrs. Forrester looking at me with a warning, I put the paper in my pocket quickly.

Alexa saw it too and blushed.

I looked over at her and mouthed 'I like you too'

She then mouthed 'I know' and stuck her tongue out at me.

We both then focused on class until the end of the period.

She held her hand out to take my hand and walked with me to the cafeteria.

A few people looked at us, most of them surprised. She didn't even glance at them.

"Want to share another cookie?" she asked.

"Yea, but this time you have to tell me a secret."

She chuckled. "Okay."

And we went to get our lunches.
