Chapter 39
I push myself to try and find the source of that piercing sound as it rattles my ear drums. But each time it sends out another wave, hitting me so hard I'm forced to go in the opposite direction. One time I manage to get close enough to one of the objects to see its a metal stake that comes to life with light each time it goes off. A emitter of some sort. Of course that's the only amount of detail I can make out before the emitter blasts me with another round. I know this is a ploy Scott or a hunter has set up to try and draw me out of the dark and into a better environment. My suspicions are confirmed when I'm blindly led out from the tree's protections and onto a open field. But not just any open field, it was were Beacon Hills High students came to play Lacrosse. The logical part of my brain was trying to make sense of this. Why would they try and draw me closer to a residential place? Unless it was a trap. Knowing Scott, he always has a plan, so why should this night be any different. I wait until I've passed most of the sound barriers to turn in the direction of housing that dares to break through the trees covering the perimeter of the school. Of course I should have known it wouldn't be that easy. I can hear Boyd and Cora's desperate howls coming from inside the school and I know they've been trapped. I almost collide with the dark figure awaiting in the shadows. "Where do you think your going?" The enjoyment in his voice gives him away instantly. I should have known the alphas were going to get involved. I snarl, spraying spit at him. "Now, now. Is that anyway to treat your favourite twin." Aiden taunts me, only managing to poke the bear harder with the stick.
I lung forward in a weak attempt to shut him up but he easily steps out of my way. "Go ahead. What were you planning on doing? Killing me? Just like you did to Brandon." He lets the last few words tumble out in a laugh. I jab uselessly at him with my claws. Aiden might not be the smartest human being on the planet but right now he had a conscience. Something I was seriously lacking. "What are the odds that he got out? It's a shame, but you know what they say. When a mutt goes rapid you have no choice but to put it down." Blinded by his hurt felt words I attack without a single battle strategy. Letting my instincts take over. Unfortunately that's not enough and Aiden easily dodges my hit, turning around quickly enough to catch my elbow on the return. "I bet you loved it too. Watching the light drain from his eyes. You say we're the monsters but really with the right push your no different. Look like the innocent flower but be the servant underneath." He whispers before letting go of my arm. His fingers curl around my throat in one swift motion. He cuts off my air supply as my feet leave the ground, kicking to connect with something. I wince at the pain that crawls up my spine when he slams me up against the rough bark of a oak. "No one to save you from yourself now? Not the homicidal, green eyed demon. Not Scott or your pathetic, little boyfriend." With each word his hand tights around my neck. "And certainly not your mother and her weak group of hunters." He throws his head back, letting out a demonic laugh. I wanted to ask him what he meant by that, but once again I forget I have no control over my body. So, I come to terms with the only thing the wolf part of me knows how to do. I fight, jolting my head forward and connecting with his. I send him sprawling backwards. After blinking a few times the world comes back into focus with Aiden baring over me. "You know, I have always liked you, Lucy. I really have. But you have to learn when to back down. And unfortunately, I just don't think we can teach you. The only reason I haven't killed you yet is because of your dad." He grins, shoving me back against the tree before I can move in. "He thought we needed you, that your special. But now that we have Scott I don't think we'll be needing your services anymore." I wanted to laugh, tell him that I would never have helped them in the first place. But I was silenced by a uncontrollable anger and just thinking about it made the red darken. He moves fast, resting his claws at my throat. I claw and thrash at him but no fighting can get him to let go of me. "Your rabid, Lucy. So I have no choice but to put you down." I can feel the pressure building and there's nothing I could do to stop what's about to happen.
