Chapter 27

It had been a week since I had last seen Britney. After our conversation in Derek's loft she had got up and walked out, not to be seen again. I was surprised to find Derek's urgency to send out a search party after her. "Why do you suddenly care so much about her?" I ask peering over the desk at him. I can hear a loud sigh come from behind the leather bound book before its placed on the desk to reveal the man hiding behind its pages. He leans back on the chair before answering. "I could care less about Britney. But you've made it quite clear I'm not allowed to kill her." He pauses, "No matter how badly I want to do it." He smiles but I don't return the look. "It all comes down to the facts though. Tonight that full moon is going to rise and Britney is going to turn. When she does its not going to be her that gets hurt, now is it?" Derek asks but I don't agree. Britney was different, she could make it through one night. "Derek, we still have a few hours. We'll find her." Truth was I didn't believe one word leaving my mouth. We had scoured the town for a whole week and I hadn't found one clue that could tell me she hadn't ditched life the minute she realized she had lost everything. "Oh, I know we're going to find her. It's figuring out what we're going to do with her when we do." He says swinging his legs down onto the floor as the large metal door screech open. There standing before me is the one man I hoped to never see again after our little talk on the highway. "Well hello Lucy." Peter says in a attempt of greeting. I don't answer though. Peter and I had never gotten off on the same foot and the way he looked at me, something tells me he still would rather see me dead. "So how is the search for the girl going or have you given up already like you usually do." Peter infers plopping himself down on the couch. "Maybe if you decided to get off your lazy ass and help us. We wouldn't be in this mess." I snap back at him. "Sorry but I'm not the one that spared her life, now am I." I don't respond to his lame attempt at getting under my skin. I pick up my bag and without another word I head for the door Peter had emerged from. "Lucy wait." Derek barks from behind me but I don't stop until I'm sitting in the seat of my car. For minutes I sit there in silence, wonder what I should do next. The sudden rap on the window sends me flying out of my seat. Trying to revive my heart from the scare, I look up expecting Derek to be staring me down with another one of his scowls. Unfortunately all I got was a smirk from Peter, pleased with startling me. He climbs into the passenger seat before I have the chance to lock the doors. "You know for a werewolf, your easily scared." He says making himself comfortable in the car. "Peter, what do you want." the longer I was in his presence, the more the thought of killing him seemed to appeal to me. But with my luck the man would find a way to come back to life again. He seemed to do that a lot. "I was curious to know what you plan to do next?" He focuses his attention on one of the various CDs scattered on my car floor. "I'm going to find her." I grip the steering wheel tighter in my hands until my knuckles turn white. "No your not. A smart girl like you knows she isn't worth chasing." He places the piece of plastic back onto the dash. "So what, she kills a few homeless people tonight. It not your problem, it's the hunters job to dispose of her." Peter's inconsiderate comment only seems to encourage me to find her now more than ever. If the hunters found her, who knows what they would do to her. Luckily the familiar ringtone of my phone streams through the car cutting our insightful conversation short. When I pick it up though, the number is blocked. "Hello?" I question and there's a long pause from the other end of the line. Just when I think the caller had hung up, a panic stricken voice comes through the speakers. "Lucy, oh thank god!" I realize it's Britney but her voice seems off, different. "You got to help me. They found me and I can't get out." The words spill from her mouth at a rapid pace. "Ok, ok Britney you need to calm down and tell me what's going on. Who found you?" I try to keep my tone steady in order to calm her down. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work. "The hunters. Lucy they found me and now they're... they're going..." To hysterical her sentence trails off. "Don't worry Britney Im going to find you. I won't let them kill you, don't be worried about that." I reassure her. "No! I'm not worried they'll kill me. If you don't get here in time I'm going to be the one to kill someone." I raise my head to see the colour drain from Peter's face. "Listen Britney where are you?" I ask. "I don't know!" This time she doesn't even try to whisper and the sudden change in volume makes both Peter and I cringe. Then I can hear a loud crash from the other end of the line followed by screams and the line goes dead.
