He did his best to sound calm and composed but I could here the slight shakiness in his voice. He was nervous and frightened. Even more than me. There was no more he could tell because he only knew what I did. I sighed and calmed myself. "Alright. I get it. I'll drop it for now." Sitting back, I ran my hand through my raven black hair trying to process it all. Giant monsters? Military being completely swept like nothing? Ugh. This day seemed to get progressively sucky. The only good news I could pick out from the entire day is that I'd have my answers soon enough. We entered one of the few tunnels that were along many of the roads in the area. About halfway through the driver stopped the car, putting his fingers to the ear bud in it. He was receiving a message. A few moments passed before his voice suddenly raised from some sort of surprise. "Wait, they're going to do what?! B-But sir, we're still out here! Even if we have good cover there is still an asset in our possession!" Those words of desperation and disbelief echoed throughout the passageway before being replaced by the sound of the wind picking up outside. "Hey, buddy, what's going on? Why the sudden outburst?" I asked a bit concerned. What else could possibly happen to make this day worse? The driver turned to me, breathing a shakily, and filled me in. "T-The military...they're going to use an N2 mine on that....that thing...." I tilted my head, very unfamiliar with what that was. "N2 mine? What's that?" The guy's partner looked down at the dash with a grimace and answered. "You see kid, an N2 mine is basically one of those next gen nukes, the clean kind, as a mine instead of a missile or bomb. Sure, no radiation, but all of the power is still there." Puzzled, I asked, "So? Why are you so worried?"
He gripped his hair, pure terror across his face. "That monster is walking along a path they baited it into. Our distance from the blast radius doesn't bode too well, in or out of this structure. There's a chance we could get trapped in here from debris and rubble if we're lucky." I swore profusely under my breath, letting all of this new information sink in. We had little time and few options. My eyes scanned the tunnel up and down looking for something...anything that could give us some way out. Some hope. Just as I had wished for it, I had received it. There was a doorway up ahead. Probably a service exit of some kind. If I was right, it'd give us a way out of the tunnel. We'd have to go the rest of the way on foot, but desperate times as they say. Since time was of the essence, we quickly drive over to the exit, parking directly in front of it. We ran out of it, taking everything that was necessary, and bolted through the heavy metal door that lead out of that death trap and to stairs which would take us to a dimly lit passageway underground. Just as we slipped into our path to safety, the guy who was freaking out in the call earlier was keeping track of the time. "Dammit..." he mumbled. "OK guys, time is pretty much up! Get down, and stay close because here it comes!" He didn't have to tell either of us twice. The two formed up around me, ready to shield me as much as they could as we all crouched. A moment of silence passed before there was a loud crash and bang that could be heard even under all of the concrete, steel and dirt above us. There was a period of violent shaking from the blast. Dust, dirt and a few bits of rock and concrete fell around us. Then, utter quiet. All three of us stood and dusted off our clothing. They checked the entrance, finding everything intact so far. Once they reached above ground however, the car was totaled and the tunnel falling apart. They both cursed in unison loud enough for it to echo downwards to me. "Hey guys! What happened?" I called out from below. They answered as they came back, "The car is scrap metal now. Completely crushed." "This is the worst transport detail ever!"
