As was usual whenever something overly traumatic happened to me, I wasted no time in running over to Teresa's house that evening to fill her in on the whole sorry screwed up tale. Needless to say, she was less than impressed with my behaviour regarding Kevin's confession.
"Are you stupid?" she asked disbelievingly. "For the first time in your life, you actually get asked out by a normal person and you say no?!"
I did my best to avoid her lazer-like glare and fidgeted uncomfortably in my seat. "Shut up. I did the right thing," I mumbled.
Because I had hadn't I? At any rate, Teresa certainly didn't seem to think so.
She gave an exasperated sigh and pinched the bridge of her nose between her forefinger and thumb. "That settles it then. You are stupid."
"I am NOT!" I protested angrily. "If anyone's stupid here, it's Kevin! I mean did he seriously think that after the way he treated me for two weeks I would just fall at his feet and say 'Oh Kevin! Of course I'll go out with you, you sullen, inarticulate moron!' Please!"
Teresa rolled her eyes at me and groaned.
"Fine then! In hindsight, I think it would be better to say that in this context, you were both stupid idiots! Happy?"
"Of course not!"
"Well you should be, because it's true!"
Completely indignant, I opened my mouth to retort, but Teresa, evidently weary of the enitre conversation, cut me off by taking advantage of my one weekness:
She hugged me.
I should probably explain now that my opinion on hugging is very much on par with my opinion on men. Which should be enough to get you to understand how not okay it was when Teresa suddenly glomped me.
"Terry, get off me!"
"I will when you agree not to get mad at me when I give my final opinion on this whole subject!"
"Okay okay, I will, just let GO!!!"
I finally succeeded in shoving her off me and we were silent for a long time while we tried to get our breath back, both of us glaring at each other from opposite sides of the room.
Suddenly, Teresa laughed, breaking the ridiculously tense silence. After a few seconds hesitation, I joined in and from there it escalated until the two of us ended up flat on our backs in the middle of the floor, both having reached that really scary soundless hysterical stage (You know, where you're laughing but no noise comes out? Creepy right?).
When we had both come to our senses and were once again sitting calmly beside each other, Teresa rubbed her still watering eyes and sighed. "Okay, now that we've both regained some vestiges of our sanity, all I will say to you regarding Kevin is this: You need to apologise. No, don't interupt me. You were too harsh on him. I understand that he freaked you out, but you're reaction was still completely out of line. Okay?"
I breathed out loudly through my nose and crossed my arms angrily over my chest.
"Aine!"
"Okay okay I'll do it! Jeez, you're so bloody pushy!"
Teresa smiled and patted my head. "Good girl. Now, onto more pressing issues. I have a...favour to ask of you."
