I risked glancing over at Kevin between my fingers. He still hadn't noticed me, and for the first time since I had entered the resteraunt I silently thanked Baby Jesus that my table was so far back. Oh, why the hell did all the crap things in life happen to me?
"Er...Aine?"
Eamonn tugged my hands away from my face and stared at me, a bemused grin on his face."What the hell are you doing? I mean, I know you have some odd opinions regarding my face, but it isn't that hideous is it?"
"Shut up. And you can let go of my hands now."
His grin widened mischieviously. "Maybe I don't want to let go of your hands."
Holy Mother of God, I was so not in the mood for this! I wrenched my hands from his grip and stood up quickly. I had to get out of there. "Er...be back in a sec. Uh, bathroom."
"O....kay then," Eamonn said, looking more confused than ever. I swear, even though my opinion of him had changed slightly, I still thought he was a few sandwiches short of a picnic.
On my way to the Ladies', I signalled wildly to Teresa, but to no avail. Herself and Connor hadn't come up for air from the moment they sat down.
I made my way quickly across the room, glancing over my shoulder every few seconds to make sure Kevin wasn't anywhere nearby. If I could just get to the bathroom without being seen...
WHAM.
I slammed into someone's chest with such force that I would've fallen on my arse, had they not grabbed me before I could do much more than wobble.
"Aine? What are you doing here?"
Hell, hell, hell! Teresa was right, I would make a tremendously crap ninja...
"Hey Kevin," I said, smiling weakly at him.
"Are you here with your parents? I don't see them any-"
I looked up at Kevin just in time to see his face freeze and his eyes narrow angrily. I followed his gaze with a sinking heart knowing full well what he was looking at. His grip on my arm tightened painfully as he glared at me.
"You're here with him aren't you? With Daly?"
I pulled my arm free and returned his angry glare with one of my own. "So what if I am? I-"
Before I could finish my sentence, Kevin grabbed hold of my arm again and pulled me through a door and out to the back yard of the resteraunt.
As soon as we were out there, I yanked my arm out of his grip, then glared at him. "What the hell is wrong with you? You can't just-"
"What's so great about Daly, huh Aine? What's so amazing about him that you'll go out with him but when it comes to me, you won't even look me in the eye?"
I sighed, exasperated. This was so stupid. "Dude. If you had actually given me a chance to speak back there, then you would know that the only reason I'm here is because Connor asked Teresa out and she dragged me along to keep her company. I presume you saw them pulling a Disney with the spaghetti in the corner?"
As I had hoped, this revelation left Kevin suitably cowed. "Oh. Yeah, I did. Um...sorry?"
I rubbed my arm, nodding. "Yeah, well, tell that to my bicep."
There was a tense silence. Then, Kevin laughed, slightly bitterly. "I'm really screwing this up aren't I?"
I grinned apologetically at him. "Little bit, yeah. Look, can we just establish something here?"
