When I was a child, I was made to believe that strange creatures existed in this world. I was afraid of the nuno sa punso, who can punish me by making my hands and feet swollen if ever I destroy an anthill. Anthills were supposed to be their houses. I was afraid to wander away from home because the tikbalang will punish me by making me aimlessly wander in the thickets. I can only find my way back if I remove all my clothes and wear it inside out. I was told not to get fruits from trees without permission else I will be punished by the kapre, the giant who resided in trees. My playmates and I were not allowed to play after lunch because the engkanto were resting and they don't like being disturbed by loud noises, so we were forced to take a nap in the afternoon.
Growing up, of course, I found that none of these were true. Children were told these things so they will learn how to show respect. Respect for the environment. Respect for the people who will be worried if ever we lose our way. Respect for those who worked so hard and deserved the fruits of their labor. And respect for the other people living in our community.
Humans. We are amnesiac, proud beings. As we grow old, we forget the lessons that our elderly taught us, be these in the form of legends or folklore. We become too independent that dependence is sometimes associated with weakness. We are living in a world that is slowly becoming detached from the spiritual realm. We no longer believe in nature spirits; they are just figments of imagination. We no longer believe in creatures who punish evil doers. We no longer believe. Sadly, with the coming years, we are also losing our connection with nature. We forgot how to respect. Respect the environment. Respect the people who love us. Respect our neighbors. And respect the community.
We forget.
I am writing this book so we can all remember. Hopefully.
