He gripped the black bags tightly, in his hands. Silently, he breathed the air of the alley way he ended up in. He stood back up to his feet.

A pair of glowing eyes bore into him, somehow amazed by him. The warlock who promised to get Alec to Brooklyn, New York City.

He recalled the warlock to be named, Magnus Bane. Alec stood awkwardly shifting weight to not tire himself, waiting. Wondered what this warlock would ask for a favor....

Alec was soon snapped out of blank thoughts and wonders his brain occupied.

"Alexander Lightwood?"

"Everyone calls me Alec."

"Okay Alexander. You're free to go."

"But-" Alec tried to protest. Of course, stupidly.

"Go before I change my mind."

And so he did. He walked off into the darkness of New York.

-

Of course, the shadowhunter was not hard to find. Within a few days, Alec found where she was. She lives in an apartment with her best friend.

Alec pulled onto the handle, and yanked it open. He stepped inside, out of the cloudy weather outside. Not the brightest place to live, for sure.

He buzzed the correct number: 27. He asked around a lot to find out where she was, but most lied and said they didn't know her. Everyone knew her.

Someone buzzed him in, willingly. No talking at all, just let in. Hesitantly, Alec stepped into an elevator to her floor, her home.

Alec looked around nervously in the small space of the elevator. The bright numbers on the side, shined so vividly. Long lines of metal and patterns moved through the elevator. Very royal, formal even. Expensive.

The elevator doors opened, he stumbled out nearly tripping over his shoes on the way. He blushed, embarrassed. Shaking his head, he knocked on the door.
The door flew open. Someone answered the door. Alec's mouth opened in utter surprise.

"Well, isn't this a delightful surprise, Alexander."

"W-what. I-i uh. Does Mia live here?"

"Yes. What's going on?"

"I need to talk to her. It's important."

Magnus opened the door wider, and stepped aside to let him in. Alec stepped into the elegant house. Full of rich colors and glitter colors. Alec stood in amazement for a minute, then work snapped him back.

Alec found Mia on a couch watching some sort of movie. When she noticed Alec, confusion washed over her features. Icy gray eyes bore into him like burning fire. It tingled his skin ever so slightly, he forced himself to look away.

He breathed. Then he explained. Praying to the angel that she would believe him.

-

Her eyes shone with excitement and belonging when Alec had finished. She knew, understood. It made sense. Lousy best friend choice. The voices telling her things she wouldn't remember. The feeling something was wrong.

"Well, shit. My boyfriend is a demon."

Alec's lips almost curved into a smile. Useless as ever. Mia agreed to go back with him. She wanted to say goodbye to Magnus first. Oh, and of course break up with her boyfriend ASAP.

"Will you stay in touch?" Magnus asked. His voice pleaded slightly with worry that she might not.

"Of course, Magnus."

"Oh, and Mia? I told you so."

"What?"

"About your boyfriend. He's a demon right?"

"Oh. Yeah."

-

The way back wasn't terrible at all. Alec couldn't help but a missing piece. Something was wrong. And he was right. Alec had no idea.

Life will never be the same as he knew. Change.
