"hey, maisy!" a voice said while maisy was walking in the school's parking lot, waiting for her mom. she turned around and found herself looking at ashton who looked like he just ran a marathon.

"you look...," maisy couldn't find a word that wouldn't hurt ashton's feelings.

"like shit?" ashton suggested, grinning.

"well, not necessarily like that but a word that's nicer than....that," maisy wasn't comfortable with publicly displaying profound language in front of or directed at people who she didn't really know well enough.

it took a while for maisy to break down her walls and actually interact with a person without showing her awkward self. and she figured that a new town was equivalent to a new slate which meant giving ashton or anyone who wanted to maintain a relationship whatsoever with her, a chance. little did she know the amount of baggage this decision could bring her.

"so.. are you still doing anything after school?" ashton said panting at a loss of air.

"uhm...maybe. do i look like someone who doesn't have any plans after school?" maisy said, obviously a little startled as to why anyone like ashton and his friends would want to spend time with the new student, someone they didn't know very well.

"no! heck no! do i seem that rude? we were serious when we wanted to do something after school. you seem like a cool chick, why not test out the waters, huh—that sounds like i'm hitting on you... trust me i'm not looking for a relationship so yeah." ashton said hurriedly, blushing a little bit.

"okay...either way, i have a date with my calculus book later so...excuse me because my mom is in the car and she is anything but pleasant when it comes to patience." maisy then made her way to the car making sure not to check behind her to avoid another conversation with him.

"hey kiddo, what took you so long? how was your first day of school?" stacy, maisy's mom, said as she ruffled maisy's hair and got into the car turning on the engine.

"hey mom. school was fine. pretty boring topics, perky teachers, weird students, the usual."

"speaking of students...you can't ignore my first question." stacey said wiggling her eyebrows at maisy. "honey, you are in the safe harbor of your car, he won't hear you. come on, who's the cute brown eyed brunette?"

maisy tried not to roll her eyes at her mom's interrogation, which she called it one since her mom wasn't used to seeing her with boys. back at home, she was always by herself. "stacey. he's just the guy who toured me around school, and he only did that because the principal asked him to. other than lunch with him and his rude friends, that was the only form of communication I've done with him. and don't text while driving! we might hit a car!" maisy said grabbing her mom's phone.

"hey! that was a business related message! do you mind if we pass by the office for a bit? i just need to sign some documents. ten minutes tops." stacey pouted her lips to lighten maisy's mood up.

"alright but please be quick."

as soon as they got to the office, stacey left the car with maisy to watch over.

"okay. sorry about that, they needed me to sign the slips so they could get their salary early." stacey said going in the car noticing that maisy had fallen asleep.

stacey had been a businesswoman for many years which gave her enough time to get higher positions and did not require her to be in the office all the time. their business circulated on emails and paperwork so she could work at home if she wanted to. the position she had at the moment allowed her to spend more time with maisy like they did before she had gotten pre-occupied with her job. nonetheless, stacey provided for her family more so than her husband did.
