In which after Chloe's mother passes, her father must step in to care for her. But her parents divorced while Chloe was still young, and she has never seen her father since. He is still a alcoholic and abusive, and Chloe runs to her best friend Maddie for help. Maddie tries her hardest to set Chloe and her father straight again, but who knew it would end so violently?

Today was the day. The day of my best friend's mother's funeral. I know how hard Chloe, my best friend, was taking this, considering her mother was so close to her. Well, they almost had to be. Chloe's father and mother got divorced when Chloe was six. Her father was abusive towards her, and her mother finally witnessed it herself. Her father moved to New York, but Chloe and her mother stayed in our small town of Pittsburgh. Two years ago, Chloe's mother went for a yearly check up, but left the doctor with shocking news - she had stage two breast cancer. Chloe was an only child, and her mother never dated nor got remarried, so it was just them. While her mom was far away at appointments, Chloe often stayed at my house. We had fun, and it took her mind off things that are happening.

Until it got worse. There's only so much chemotherapy can do, and it wasn't helping her much. She soon lost her hair due to the powerful medicine, and spent many days laying on the couch. We all knew she wasn't getting better, but I guess Chloe didn't accept that.

Who knew, though, that two years later, I would be dressing in a somber black gown for her funeral? I surely didn't. And Chloe surely didn't, either. I felt so bad for Chloe, she is such a sweet girl who didn't deserve this. In fact, the only reason I wasn't looking forward to the funeral was because I would see my best friend cry, and know I can't do much about it. Sure, I can give her a hug or candy, but I can't raise her mother from the dead.

But believe me. If I could, I would.
No doubt about it.
