*3 Main types of blood vessels

1. Arteries / Artery

2. Veins / Vein

3. Capillaries / Capillary

3 Layers of Blood Vessels

- Inner layer : Endothelium

- Middle layer : Involuntary muscle with fibrous tissue

- Outer layer : Fibrous tissue

*Arteries

- All arteries carries oxygenated blood from heart to body

- Except Pulmonary Artery > Carry deoxygenated blood from heart to lungs

Aorta > Arteries > Arterioles > Capillaries > Venules > Vein > SVC/IVC

Aorta > Arteries > Arterioles > Capillaries > Venules > Vein > SVC/IVC

*Veins

- All veins carry deoxygenated blood back to the Heart

- Except Pulmonary Vein > Carries oxygenated blood from lungs to heart

- Larger veins have valves > Prevent backflow of blood and ensure blood flows to the heart

Capillaries

- Consist of :

> Single layer of endothelium with a verythin basement membrane

> Tiny vessels that link the smallest arterioles to the smallest venules

*Difference between Arteries and Veins

Arteries          |          Veins

A: Carry blood away from the heart     |     V: Carry blood towards the heart

A: Oxygenated blood (except Pulmonary Artery)   |   V: : Deoxygenated blood (except Pulmonary Vein)

A: Thick muscular walls     |      V: Thin muscular walls

A: Have elastic tissue in walls     |     V: Little / no elastic tissue in walls

A: Do not process valves     |     V: Larger veins posses valves
