Structure of the Mouth
- Function of Mouth :
1. Breakdown food by chewing
2. Saliva mixed with food to form a moist ball (food bolus)
3. Salivary enzyme (beta-amylase) digest starch in food
- Salivary Glands > *3 types :
1. Parotid gland
2. Sublingual gland > below the tongue
3. Submandibular gland > below the jaw
- Lined by mucous membrane
- Roof > Hard palate & Soft palate
- Uvula > Function : Prevent food from entering into the nasal cavity
- Tongue > Has taste buds, Has projection called papillae, Voluntary muscle that helps to swallow the food
- Teeth > Functions : For biting food into pieces & Grinding or chewing of food
Oropharynx
- Function : Passageway for the food
