"Jackson, can you come here for a moment?"
"Yeah, Mom. What's up?"
"Well, as you know...it's been a while since your father and I divorced. It's been almost 8 years since the split, and I think my time to move on is well overdue."
"O-oh. So what are you trying to say?"
"Jackson...there's a man that I've been seeing for a while now. I know it's sudden and new to you, but we made the decision to get married. He recently bought a house about 15 minutes from here. We'll be moving in with him and his son within the next month or so."
--------------------
That was the day my life changed drastically.Although I was happy that my mom could finally be with someone that makes her smile, I couldn't help but feel uncertain about the situation. I'm going to be living with people I've never met before, people that are going to be called my new family. It's just so sudden. However, I don't have a choice.
The next few weeks were filled with packing and cleaning. We were preparing for the move. It was a lot of work for two people, but we managed.
As I packed my room's belongings into boxes, I came across pictures of both my parents and I. Looking at them still sent a wave of depression to my heart despite the largr amount of time that has passed. It was time to move on to a new family, to make new photos, new memories. I'll always miss the family I once had, and I'm still not ready to be a part of a new one.
A soft knock at the door pulled me out of my reminiscence. I quickly tucked the photos away in a box and opened the door for my mom.
"Honey, are you almost done packing? We're moving in tomorrow already," my mom asked.
"Yeah...I just need to put away some of my awards then I'll be done."
She looked at me with a somewhat pitiful expression. As a mother, she could tell I was uncertain about leaving. She opened her arms a enclosed me with a tight, warm hug.
"Jackson, I know it's tough for you. I know it's sudden, I know how you feel. Believe me, the man I'm marrying is a good person. I wouldn't be doing this if I was unsure of our future as a family. Trust me, you will love him and his son. Just bear with it for now, you'll get used to it soon," my mom said soothingly into my ear.
I didn't know how to respond. I just nodded in agreement.
"Tomorrow's gonna be the first day you meet them. You'll get along with them really well." With that, she left my room, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
--------------------
Today's the day I meet my new dad and brother. I'm scared, but excited at the same time.I looked at myself in the mirror one last time to make sure I was presentable.
"Jackson! Are you ready?" my mom called from downstairs.
"Yeah! I'm coming!"
I rushed down the steps and out the door to the car. We were on our way to a restaurant for lunch.
We arrived before the other party. My mother and I were shown to our table, and we patiently waited for the man and his son to come.
10 minutes later, my mom tapped me on the shoulder.
"That's them!"
I looked up from my seat to see a sturdy looking man walking in.
My eyes shifted to the right. Beside him, was the most beautiful, attractive human being I ever laid eyes on. My heartbeat quickened...I started to feel hot.
The boy approached us and outstretched his arm to me.
"Hi, nice to meet you. I'm Mark."
