Our souls left our body. The color drained from our faces. Our chests ached with pain as we heard the ridiculous news. How could they do this to us? Do they even care about our happiness?
"Mom...you agreed to this? How could you? I would understand if you weren't okay with the whole step-brother relationship issue, but I never thought you would take it this far."
"Jackson, this is what's best for the both of you. You guys will never move on if we don't do anything about it," my mother replied.
"What do you know about what's best for us? What makes you think that we're just going to listen and follow your orders?"
"I am your mother. I am the one who raised you to who you are today. Ever since you were born, I've given you everything. You know I have. I always put you as my first priority. I sacrificed so much for you because I love you, Jackson. If anyone knows what's best for you, it's me. You know that just as much as I do. I don't ask for much, but this is something that I want you to do...for me."
I stopped speaking. How could I say anything against that? What she said is true, she's taken care of me all her life. She worked so hard as a single mother for so many years. Now that she's finally found a new husband and happiness, how could I just take that away from her? I had nothing else to say. I buried my head in my hands.
"Mark, Jackson...I promise that this marriage arrangement will work out. Before you know it, you'll be with the woman of your dreams. You'll have a great life, start a wonderful family, and continue to be happy for the rest of your lives," Mark's father chimed in.
"But, Dad...this isn't what I want. It's not what we want. I don't want the woman of my dreams. Hell, I don't even want a woman. Can't you see that Jackson's the one I need? I know it's shameful that we are step siblings, but we can't help the way we feel about each other," Mark responded.
"Mark, just as Jackson's mother said, I am your parent. I don't request much of you, so I ask that you follow through with this request."
"Dad, this isn't fair!"
"Mark, you will thank me later on in the future. For now, we will go through with the plans. Don't say anything for now, just take some time to rest and let everything sink in."
With that, we both left to our room without saying another word.
******1 week later*******
"Boys! Come down here," Mark's father called from the living room. We both walked downstairs, already expecting what our parents had to tell us.
"Alright, we have decided on your future wives," he continued, making us sigh in irritation. "You both have appointments with these lovely ladies today. Let's go over the details of these girls. Jackson, your bride-to-be's name is Mina. She's the same age as you. Mark, you will be with someone named Carly. She's a couple years younger than you, but she's mature."
As Mark's father continued to explain the outline of our blind-date, we boiled with frustration. We couldn't see why this was so necessary. Why can't we just live our lives the way we want to?
"Is everything clear? I don't want you two messing this up," Mark's father finally asked.
"Yeah..." we both responded in monotone.
"Alright, great. You two go get ready, and I'll be waiting in the car. We don't have much time, let's go!"
--------------------
Mark and I both got dropped off at our locations. Of course we weren't at the same place. The temptation to run off together would be too strong.
I sat at my table in this big, fancy restaurant that I couldn't remember the name to...not like it mattered anyway. I impatiently waited for my future-wife to join me.
A few moments later, I saw a pretty girl walking towards my table. I guessed it was her and waved her down unmannerfully to my table. I could care less about my actions right now.
"Hi, I'm Mina," the girl started while sitting down across from me.
"Hey. Jackson. Jackson Wang," was all I responded with.
"So I heard we got paired up by our fathers/step-fathers."
"Yup."
"Must be a little awkward right?"
"Yup."
"Anyway, what do you like to do for fun?"
"Nothing."
"Do you know when our wedding date is?"
"No."
The rest of time was spent with me giving her shitty, one-worded answers. I could tell she was trying to break the ice, but I really didn't care to talk to her.
After our meeting, we departed in our own ways. She probably feels crappy but who gives a shit.
I met back up with Mark and his dad. By the look on Mark's face, I could tell that he didn't have such a great time either.
"How did it go?" I whispered into his ear so his dad wouldn't hear.
"How do you think. Probably the same as yours."
"Yeah, it wasn't good either."
There was a long, dragging silence on the way home. Neither of us were in the mood to talk, and all we wanted to do was go home and never come out again.
------1 week later------
"Boys! I have a surprise for you," Mark's father called from his seat. We both walked over to him to see what it was.
"I got you and your bride-to-bes rooms at the finest hotel here! It's a 3-day stay, and I'm sure it'll be a great way for you guys to bond. I know it's a little weird since you're marrying people you've just met, but I promise this will be a great getaway!"
Great. Just FUCKING GREAT. First we're forced to marry them, and now we gotta spend time with them before our marriage. We don't even like those chicks. I mean, I'm sure they're great people, but I have no desire of being with them for multiple days.
"Dad, is this really necessary?" Mark asked.
"Of course it is! How else will you bond?! You two start getting packed. I'm dropping you guys off tonight."
Tonight? What the hell? Does he think we're the fucking Flash? Can we do shit at 100x human speed? Whatever...
-------------------
"Alright guys, we're here. Enjoy yourselves! Don't you guys even think about leaving. If you guys do, you won't know what's coming at you. But anyway, have fun!!"
And with that, Mark's father drove off, and we were left alone to find these two girls. And the nightmare starts now.
Mark and I walked up to the desk clerk to ask for our room number and keys.
"Oh, you two are sharing the room with the other girls. I believe they are already up there. Here are your keys. Enjoy your stay," the clerk said.
Bags in hand, we took the elevator to the 10th floor. We found our room number and opened the door with our key.
We were met with the sight of both our bride-to-bes naked...making out on the bed.
