They call me the mermaid miracle i was raised with land dwellers for thirteen years. i lived in the ocean for five years. i'm the mermaid miracle and this is my story.
"Miracle over here, your lesson is going to start" Theo was standing outside of his hut he had on a shirt with holes and worn out pants with rips in the knees. Theo and his brother Lu are waiting for a ship to bring them new clothing and supply's to the island. I stood up nearly falling. for thirteen years i have been getting use to my feet. swimming was easier then walking. Theo came running over to help me he had big arms and a cut chest."here" Theo put his arm around my waist to help me walk, this was nothing new. "no worries you will get use to it" my brown hair fell around me as i looked at him fed up with hearing that same thing for thirteen years. "don't look at me like that i know you will" Theo was nineteen and his voice was soft. i looked to the water and seen a wheal jump gracefully as it glistened in the distance with out thinking i pushed Theo away and started walking towards the ocean.. i'm walking on my own i turned to Theo again and smiled i finally got it!. "told you it would happen" i smiled as he came to stand beside me.
we got to the hut where Theo had set up my lesson, Theo thinks i can learn how to speak in his tongue so he is teaching me. i can say some words but i can write them all perfectly i write to Lu, I normally don't talk unless me and Theo are alone. "you ready" i nodded. Theo's face brightened. " great let start" i could feel he was proud of me the lesson went on for awhile. when we left i could hear the mermaids singing with the creatures of the ocean. i want to go home but i couldn't leave Theo and i don't know how to change my feet into my smooth blue tail. Theo seen me looking at the ocean "come on" he took my hand and started to pull me along like the tide did. realizing he was taking me to the beach where i could be close to the ocean i pushed his hand away and walked in front of him the sand went from warm to damp and wet i stopped looking down feeling the clumps of sand under my toes.
Theo came up beside me and sat down. "it sure is nice" i looked over at him and took my note pad out of the old over sized dress Lu had given me. "Lu will get mad if he see's me out here" i gave the note to Theo he looked back at lu's hut that was resting slightly behind a group of trees. " i don't know" he leaned back on his for arm and looked back to me. in that moment i spoke for the first time "he does not like me near the water" my voice was soft and quiet but Theo heard me and his jaw drooped."you talked" he was surprised to hear me talk."yes i can talk, i have been paying attention to your lessons" i smiled at him as i laid down in the sand."how long have you been able to talk?" i looked out to the ocean and kept my eyes there. "two years now, i have been practicing in my room before sleeping" his eyes widened like they had when he found me that day i washed up on the island. "why didn't you tell me?" he sat up and propped himself up with his hands, i looked over at him." i was waiting until i was ready" he looked at me nodding and i knew he understood.
the sun was sinking behind the ocean as we walked back. when we reached the three makeshift shelters we said goodnight and went into our separate huts. i leaned against the opening in the wall that passed for a window and looked out at the ocean listening to the waves and imagining i was swimming with my friends in the tangles of coral and grass gardens. in the world under the ocean when you were eighteen your parents would hold a ceremony called vision, during vision every one would gather in a swirling coral garden where you would pick some one to be with for your whole life but every one there had to approve, you would also invasion your life with that person. when one was chosen you would receive a vine mark on your shoulder it represented growth and maturity. i would have chosen Keith he was my best friend and he had told me the night before i was taken away that he would chose me for vision. I slowly made my way over to my bed letting myself slip away into a dream.
Lu came into my hut to wake me up, i woke from a dream of the clam palace and my family."Theo is waiting for you on the beach" i nodded and followed Lu who was twenty six out into the cold air and made my way to the beach as Lu disappeared into the trees. When i reached the beach Theo was leaning against a tree his lean muscular form giving the illusion of a solute against the rising sun. slowly i walked over to him. he turned his face to look at me."Miracle tell me what its like where you came from" this surprised me Theo had never expressed interest in my secret world. Now standing beside him i gazed out to the ocean wondering what they were all doing, if the coral was still in the glowing gardens by the ruin of a building i knew as the clam palace. "well i'm not spousest to talk about it with land dwellers" Theo looked out across the ocean and i could sense the curiosity in his movement, i could hear his thoughts of wounder and longing.
