Chapter Sixteen
The following morning, I run out and get coffee and pastries. When I return Liam and Cher are stirring from sleep. "Morning" I grin, handing them their drink before throwing Liam the bag of food. Removing my clothing, I climb back into the bed. We cuddle for ten minutes.
Liam sits in the middle, with Cher and I leaning on his muscled chest. "You were quiet this morning, I didn't hear you leave" he comments.
"Less of a wolf, more of a cat" I reply, and he chuckles warmly. I sip my coffee, dread circling inside my stomach. "So, I thought we could sit on the balcony for breakfast if you want?"
"This isn't breakfast?" Cher asks, glancing in the bag.
"No it is. But we need to talk, and I just think it would be better if we weren't in bed" I suggest, before getting out of the bed. Without redressing, I walk over to the French doors and slide them open. The warm spring breeze blows over my nude body, as I sit at the glass table.
There is a moment of pause, before Liam and Cher both follow me – sitting on white modern lawn chairs on either side of me. I sip my coffee quickly, staring over the acres of land that belongs to us.
"I'll begin" Liam says, cutting the silence. I nod to him gratefully.
"So I grew up in a Pack in Chicago, and I didn't have any real issues growing up. I mean I didn't get on with my siblings...I was the youngest of four, and no one ever gets on with their older brothers, right?"
I make a noise of agreement, but Cher stays quiet as she listens. Liam pauses, wetting his lips with his tongue, before continuing. "When I got to eighteen, and finished high school, I got bored of the Pack life so decided to go Rogue. I travelled around a bit, got into some trouble in Oregon".
"Trouble?" I question.
"Got into a bar fight, and almost paralysed some drunk prick" he shrugs, grimacing slightly. "I know I shouldn't have fought a human, no matter how much of a dick he was, but I couldn't help myself. I'm not good with my drink".
"Is he alright now?" Cher asks.
"Yes, doll, he is fine" Liam nods. He smiles at her for a moment, before speaking. "You go next beautiful. Tell us about you".
"Alright" she nods, placing her coffee down on the table. "So I grew up in the Saxondale Pack – which you obviously know. I was an only child growing up, and even though I was close to my dad there was also a distance with my mum. She was depressed after rejecting her other mates to choose my dad, and it was so hard for him to see that he couldn't make her happy".
Her grey eyes glittered with tears. "Anyway, when I was sixteen she killed herself. Then it was just my dad and I...and it was hard. And when I got a few months off my eighteenth birthday, I realised I didn't want to end up like my mum. So I ran away".
"And here you are" I smiled softly, leaning over and kissing her lips gently. She nods, wiping her tears away, before picking her coffee up again.
"Yeah, and here I am" she nods. I sit back, before finishing the last of my coffee. "You're turn, Leila" she says, in that sweet and innocent voice that I love. I nod, before sighing heavily.
"Alright, my story is a lot longer than both of yours...and a lot messier. So just don't say anything until I'm done alright? I've never told anyone all of this before". I take a moment to compose myself, before I begin on the story I really didn't want to tell.
I dropped my fake accent. "My real name is Mariana Lucia Fernandez" I tell them, and their eyes are both wide with shock. "I am from Monterrey in Mexico. My father was white, so I can pass for both Caucasian and Hispanic if I wish. I have been passing for white for the last few years. But I am Mexican.
"I grew up in a Mexican Pack, which was small and everyone knew everyone's business. I don't know my father, I'm pretty sure my mother didn't know exactly who he was either. All she used to say was that he was white American who we would be better off without. And by we, I mean my twin brother Diego and I.
"When I was eight my mother found her mate, and they ran away together. I've never seen her since. The Pack decided it was better to send us off to live with our grandparents – who had transferred to Detroit Pack before we were born. So we went to live with them.
"I hated it. My grandparents are extremely religious, and I guess I believe in God, but my mother had not brought us up as harshly as they were. So I rebelled a little. Not much as I was still young. But I decided to learn sleight of hand magic, as my grandmother would always get angry and say that witches were the work of El Diablo. So I got good at card games and tricks.
"As we were growing up, my brother and I had to find time to hide away from our grandparent's strictness. We were both really good at accents and pretending to be other people. So we made up our own little world. And in this world we were rich, white, Americans. Leila and Julian we called each other – and to this day we still call each other these names.
"Anyway, I am getting off track. When I was fifteen, there was a new family that moved into the Pack. And they had a girl who was my age, and her name was Katy. And...well long story short...we started dating each other secretly. I had never been with a girl – or a guy for that matter – but I really like Katy.
"And one day Katy walked me home from school, and she kissed me goodbye. What we didn't know was that my grandmother was home early from work and saw us. She was convinced that El Diablo was inside of me, and was making me succumb to such sins. So she punished me".
I pause in my story telling, taking a deep breath as I recalled the event eight years before. "Are you alright?" Liam asks gently, I don't answer. "Leila...Mariana...dammit Leila".
I chuckle softly, "yes I am fine. And please call me Leila. Mariana died a long time ago".
"So she punished me bad, had crazy ass priests try and solve me...and lots of stuff that I don't wish to think about. Anyway Julian helped me sneak out, and I ran. I lived on the streets for almost a year, using my sleight of hand to get me money and food. I got caught and got a record, before I was put back onto the streets.
"I decided from that moment that I was going to kill Mariana and become Leila. I was going to be American, and white, and rich. God I was going to be so fucking rich that I could do anything I wanted. So I started out by sleeping with older guys with lots of money, and stealing things and selling them on.
"Then not long after I turned sixteen, I saw an elderly man in a really expensive suit. I was still a pup, so at that age I couldn't work out scents very well. I should have noticed he was a Werewolf, but I was too busy pickpocketing his wallet.
"He tracked me, and I thought he was going to kill me. But he actually did something completely different. He brought me a hot meal, and gave me a hotel room for the night. He told me that he'd never met someone who'd been able to pickpocket him before. Albert his name was, and he was a con man. And he taught me everything he knew.
"By the age of eighteen I was a millionaire. The two of us were travelling the world, pulling schemes and cons. And I was anyone I wanted to me. One day I could be Becky from Texas. The next I was Julia from Paris. I could be anyone, and I was anyone.
"Then when I was nineteen, Albert told me he was getting too old for all the conning we were doing. But I wasn't rich enough to fully become Leila just yet. So, I put together a gang. I ran a gang of the world's best con artists and grifters. And we were unstoppable.
I put Leila's American accent back in place. "And here I am, twenty three, and a multi-millionaire. I created Leila, and here she is. I am Leila, and Leila is me".
