Tris
I speed through the papers on the desk, rushing to find the right file.
Where the hell did I put the file for Ramsey?
I stop for a moment and take a deep breath. Stay calm Tris, it'll be fine. Everything will be okay. I keep telling myself that but I don't even know anymore if it's true or not.
Once I get to the bottom of the stack of files, I finally see it. Oscar Ramsey is printed across the top of the yellow folder and I scan through it, trying to find the prescription. It doesn't take long for me to find it.
I grab it in my hand and put it into the pocket of my white lab-looking coat. Calmly, I walk back to the front of the veterinary hospital. Trying to look as professional as possible.
I walk out into the waiting area filled with some black chairs and couches. A dark mahogany coffee table with different magazines sits in front of the two black love seats in the back of the room, lining the walls. On one side, in the corner of the medium-sized room, sits a dark brown recliner. On the other side, in the other corner of the room, is a dark brown couch.
A women who looks to be in her late 50's is standing in front of the front desk. As I walk towards her, I see a grey colored Pug with a blue collar around his neck on a leash at her side. I give her a polite smile, "Hello ma'am. I've found Oscar's medical prescription, I apologize for the time it took to find it."
She waves her hand a bit, dismissing the apology. "It's fine dear," She says and I can hear the slight Chicago accent in her voice. "Don't worry about it."
I nod and watch as she walks out the door. Finally. That was the last client of the day so now I can leave. Don't get me wrong, I love to help nurture all of the animals and be of assistance to the owners but sometimes it can get exhausting.
"Prior!" I hear from behind me. I turn around to see the face of the hospital's neurologist, Dr. Edgar Benton.
"Hey Edgar. What's up?" I say as he approaches me.
"Would you be able to do me a big favor?" He asks.
"Okay, depends on what it is."
"Would you be willing to watch Dodger for me next week? Please?" He begs.
I smile a bit. "Sure, it wouldn't be a problem. Just give me a call whenever." I say nonchalantly.
Edgar has been planning on taking a week for himself since he's been working his ass off the past few months and he needs a well deserved break. The other day he told me that he was going to visit his family in Oregon for the week. Which I thought was a good plan for him since he hasn't seen them in months.
"Thanks, I knew I could count on you." He winks
"Anytime, I don't mind." I chuckle, shaking my head.
He grins at me then walks away towards the X-Ray room. Edgar has always been a good friend to have. He and Christina are the two people who I know I can count on to have my back and they know that they can count on me as well. I met Chris through softball when we were on the same team in freshman year of high school and we met Edgar during softmore year. All of us were so excited when we found it that we'd all be majoring in the same career. Although, we did have to separate for college. Luckily, we got jobs at the same veterinary hospital.
I'm actually from southern Louisiana, not Illinois. My family moved here when I was thirteen and in the eighth grade. During senior year of high school, I had to move again. Christina, Edgar, and I were all completely devastated. But luckily we always stayed in contact with each other. So now, here we are. Back together. Working at the same place.
