Chapter 7
Adrienne and I were half way into Captain America at my place. She was on the couch while I was on the floor leaning on the front of the couch.
I took a bite of my beef chow fan.
My lasagna was a disaster. Adrienne had arrived at exactly eight o’clock. I let her chill in the living room of apartment while we picked through the DVDs she brought for us to choose from.
The choices were No Strings Attached, A Very Long Engagement, The Hangover, Saw 3, and Captain America. I wanted to watch Saw 3 because I love scary movies and I know it may make me sound perverted but maybe she’d sit closer to me some time during the movie. She on the other hand wanted to watch A Very Long Engagement, talk about chick flicks.
We were in the middle of a debate on the pros and cons of each, yes, we were lame enough to debate it out, when we started to smell something burning.
My lasagna, my mind-blowing, palate-wooing lasagna was burned black as the night. I had forgotten to take it out in time because I was so absorbed in our movie discussion.
And so we decided to order Chinese instead and watch The Hangover. After that we went for Captain America.
Way to go Jules, lure a girl with her favorite food and end up ordering Chinese and having her use a fire extinguisher while you get the burning object out the oven holding it at arms length.
Then I felt a thud next to me and warmth on my right side. She dropped next to me on the floor. I looked at her with questioning eyes.
“What? Your spot looked more comfy,” she laughed. Even in the dark and with her eyes all squinty from laughing, I could still make up their chocolate brown color. Her hair was in a messy bun and all I wanted to do was touch her hair to see if it was as soft as it looked.
She was wearing black leggings and a razor-back with a sweatshirt that was cut off at the shoulders showing off her sharp collar bones. Her skin looked like it was as smooth as soap if I tried to touch it.
I wanted to wrap an arm around her and have her scoot closer. But I had so many reasons not to. What if she wasn’t ready for contact with guys? I could still remember the whole handkerchief thing that time in the elevator. It was as if she had seen a ghost.
Then there was the whole thing with Nate. I might not be able to stop myself from falling for her if I get any closer. But I wasn’t doing a good job at that anyway.
I felt her head lean on my shoulder. My eyes widened and I was sure my heartbeat was going at about 100 per minute but I didn’t move and tried to keep it cool.
About an hour later my eyes were drooping and Addie was fast a sleep with her head still leaning on my shoulder.
“We should do this more often,” I mumbled, fighting off sleep unsuccessfully. I slowly pulled my right arm up and around her right shoulder and dozed off.
----
Weeks passed and somehow this ritual of ours continued. Every night after classes and meetings and activities with the rest of the gang we’d meet up either at my place or hers and watch a movie or do homework then chat till one of us fell asleep or if we had absolutely nothing to do, we’d go out for coffee or biking around town or play billiards at the town bar.
