SIMON
I felt his cold touch before he even made contact with my skin. His freezing skin, that I adored so much, had always been a source of comfort for me. Whenever things would get bad his cold hands would cup my face and send shivers down my spine leaving me breathless.
Baz tells me, now that I am magicless, my blood smells more and more like a Normal. I often tried to figure out if he was implying something. There were times when I thought Baz would take it too far and lose control. He could hear my heart rate grow faster and smirk with his gleaming fangs hanging out of the corner of his lips.
"Scared I might bite you, Snow?" He would whisper.
"Never," I reply but he could sense my apprehension. He leans into me and I feel his cold skin all around me. He tucked in his lethal fangs just before our lips collided.
But tonight his hands trembled against my shoulder. Even with my mind still clouded in sleep I knew something was wrong.
I open my eyes to see nothing but the darkness that surrounds us. If it weren't for his trembling hand gripping my shoulder I wouldn't have known Baz was in the bed with me.
"Baz, what's wrong?" I said into the blackness.
"Simon," whispered Baz. His voice sounded forced like someone's hand was clamped over his throat and he was barely able to take a breath.
"Baz?!" I shouted more concerned. I fumbled around the bedside table for the lamp and flicked it on.
Baz was lying shirtless on his back. There was a look of intense pain on his face and every muscle in his chest looked constricted and tense. His shaking hands moved from my shoulder to the roots of his hair, raking his fingers through his long Raven colored hair.
I watched in disbelief, frozen in fear, as he let out a howl of agony. Everything in my body told me to rush to his aid or call out to Penelope in the next room but it was like someone was holding me in place. Forcing me to watch my boyfriend in pain.
Something in me finally snapped back into place and I sprang into action. My wings knocking everything off the shelf as I kneeled on Baz's side of the bed. His eyes were squeezed shut and his teeth were gritted. It was like some invisible creature was attacking him. Or something on the inside was trying to claw its way out of his chest.
"Baz, what's wrong? How can I help?!" My voice was cracking and panicked. I didn't know what to do. My mind was in a frenzy and no coherent thought could be formed.
He sat up in the bed and hunched over into the crook of my neck and let out another scream of pain. He desperately wrapped his arm around me like I was the only thing keeping him alive.
I heard rustling in the next room and within seconds the bedroom door swung open. Penelope frantically ran in wearing a nightgown wand in hand. Her curly hair cascaded wildly over her shoulders.
"What's going on in here?" She shrieked. Her hands covered her mouth at the sight that laid before her.
"Penny, do something!" I shouted trying to hold Baz steady in my arms. I could feel the shoulder of my shirt getting wet with tears.
"Simon, please, make it stop!" Baz cried. I could see the tears rolling down his cheeks.
Penelope ran to Baz's side and hovered her wand over his sweating forehead. She tried every healing spell that she could think of but nothing eased his pain. With every spell Baz cried out, "Please, make it stop, Simon, it hurts so much!"
It killed me to see Baz like this. He was always so composed and strong. But seeing him lose control of his body like this I couldn't bare it. He looked so broken and vulnerable. Penelope was panicking and her hand started to shake. Everything she tried seemed to result in more pain for Baz. She looked helplessly up and me her eyes brimming with tears.
"I don't know what else to do!" She shirked and buried her face in her hands.
Baz desperately threw his hands at her shoulders and gripped them tightly.
"Knock me out, Bunce, please!" He begged.
She nodded and fumbled for her wand. She casted, "Out Like A Light!"
At first I thought it didn't work he just kept screaming and crying. But then all his muscles loosened and he slumped back on my shoulder. He looked up at me with those grey eyes. "Thank you," he muttered before his eyes finally fluttered closed.
The room was silent for a minute. All I could hear was Baz's steady breaths. Penelope and I stared in disbelief at the now unconscious Baz. I wanted to say something but no words could be formed in my mouth. All I could do was hold Baz as tight as I could and bury my face in his shoulder.
"Simon," Penny finally said, "What happened?"
"I-I don't know," I whispered my mind was still racing and I couldn't calm myself down. Penny instructed me to breathe while she looked around the room for anything that could have caused this.
"What exactly are you looking for?" I finally asked.
"A hex, jinx, potion anything! Just something that could've made him freak out like that."
She looked under and behind everything in the room but she found nothing out of the ordinary. She even went to the window to see if anyone could have been standing outside to cast a spell.
"We're too high up," she exclaimed, "If someone were to cast a spell on the ground they wouldn't have been able to see Baz through the window! The spell wouldn't have been nearly as affective if someone could see him."
"I don't care how it happened all I want to know is why!"
The bedside lamp suddenly flew across the room and hit the wall. Millions of pieces scattered across the floor plunging us in complete darkness. My wings must have twitched sending the lamp across the room. I gripped Baz tighter and muttered.
"Dammit!" I said. Then I heard Penelope's wand rolling somewhere on the floor.
"Shit!" She cursed and groped the floor for her dropped wand. After a few seconds she retrieved her wand and spelled the lamp back together.
I looked down at Baz. His face looked so calm and peaceful. I never wanted anything like that to happen again. Not to him. My eyes scanned his body for any actual physical injuries. All seemed fine except for bloody slashes on the back of his right hand.
They definitely weren't there before. He would have gotten blood on Penny or me if they were. I put his head on the pillow and went to the bathroom to fetch the first aid kit.
I took a long look at myself in the mirror. I was a wreck. My hair was a disheveled mess of blonde curls going in all directions, my eyes were read and puffy from holding back tears, and my skin was almost as pale as Baz's.
I stepped out of the bathroom with the first aid kit in hand. Penny was still rummaging around the room for anything that would become the answer to why this was happening. But I don't think it's going to be that easy. It's never just that easy.
I got back in the bed and leaned against the headboard placing Baz's head in my lap. I brushed his hair out of his eyes and planted a kiss on his forehead. I thought I saw his mouth turn up into a smile for a split second. Which made me glad.
I dabbed a cloth onto Baz's injured hand cleaning the blood from the wound. The more blood I dabbed away the clearer the shape of the slashes were. The wound on his hand was in the shape of a bird. A phoenix most likely.
"Penny, look at this," I said. She leaned over and took a good look at the cuts. She looked back up at me not saying a single word. There was no doubt that we had another piece to this puzzle.AMARA
The spell was cast. The pain finally gone. Now all was left for me to do was wonder what poor sap got landed with the torture. With each blow of his fist I felt nothing but someone else out there was. Then the "Out Like Light," charm was cast and everything went dark.
