Chapter 5

Meg's POV

It's been five weeks and three days since we left the bunkers. Training has increased; there are more drills, missions, fighting, and more propos. Tomorrow morning myself, Finn, Collin, and a small team are heading out to District 5 where there has been fighting on the borders. The Council has been hoping for some footage for the propos, but I know that the boys and I just want to get back to fighting in this war instead of talking into a camera while others fight for us.

Even with the mission being tomorrow, I once again find myself lying awake in bed with no urge to sleep; I know I need all the sleep I can get, but for some reason I just can't stop the white-noise of my mind keeping me awake. I slide out of the covers of my bed and step onto the cool floor. Heading to the door, I peek out, looking for anyone on patrol. Since the bombings they've assigned patrol officers to walk the halls, making sure people are safe in their beds and not up to anything. I'm fairly certain that this is partially my fault, but also Collin and Jace's, everyone found out about them turning a wheelchair into a weapon.

I see two people on patrol and quietly close the door until I hear them walk past; I watch them walk down the hall until they turn the corner and are gone. I slide out of my room, closing the door behind me. I start to walk towards Collin and Finn's compartment, but stop before I open the door; I can hear both of the boy's snores through the door. I shouldn't wake either of them; they need their sleep for tomorrow.

Where to now? I guess I could go to Haymitch, wait no. Effie had them install motion sensors on his door before the bombings to prevent me from late night drinking. Arvis? No, last time I tried to wake her up she punched me and went back to sleep. She's very violent, trained as a soldier, became a Staff Sergeant at the age of 22, then a council member just a few months after, and then the past year learning the ropes of filming and cinematography from Cressida and a man named Dannis. Pretty impressive for only being 25 years of age. I consider going to see mom and Lacy, but they're probably asleep and I wouldn't want to disturb them either.

I begin to walk, not paying much mind to where I'm walking, my mind in a dull haze, like when you're on a long elevator ride and just standing there staring at the wall, and the next thing you know is the elevator door opening on your floor. And it's when I see the number of the compartment that the doors open and I'm thrown out of the zoned out state of mind I was in. I had wandered into the hospital wing, and was now standing in front of room 7. My subconscious brought me to her.

I take out my security pass and scan it into the lock, the door slides open and I walk into her room. I know I should be behind the doctor's one way glass, but they've recently begun to restrain her while she sleeps due to violent night terrors.

I walk towards the bed and Jem's eyes immediately snap open and lock onto mine, "Hey..."

The calm of her voice surprises me, but I keep my demeanor and voice steady "Uh..hey.."

"Couldn't sleep?" I shake my head. "Yeah, me neither...you can sit down if you want"

I look at the chair beside her bed, so many others had sat in this chair to talk to her, Katniss, Peeta, Annie, Haymitch, Cyria, Finn, Collin, Jace, Beetee, even Johanna, but I never had until now. "Thanks..."

"I heard you're going out to 5 to fight and shoot some propos." How normally she's talking still surprises me; I was expecting her to yell as soon as I came in.

"Yeah, myself, Collin, Finn, and a team are all going."

She chuckles "Shoot some of those Peacekeepers for me. Okay?"
