Chapter Two

The next evening at work I go in to see Steve first thing. Something about that story last night doesn't add up. I knock on his door and wait for his invitation. "Come in," I hear. I peek in on him and see him lying in bed with the lights off, the blinds closed, and eyes staring up at the ceiling. "Steve? Are you ok?" I ask him. He looks at me with this faint smile. "Yeah," he says, "I was just thinking about that night. It's so weird, the wounds are almost healed now but the doctors said I lost so much blood." I sit on the bedside chair and frown a little," How is that weird Steve?"

He keeps staring at the ceiling, "I don't remember any of it and the police report couldn't find any suspects or any blood at the scene..." He just keeps staring. I’m starting to worry about him. I get up and stand by his bed, "Listen, I know this may be confusing right now but what you need to be focusing on is getting better. As much as we love having you here, I know you don't want to stay here forever, do you?" He looks at me, "No, you're right." He smiles and sits up, "this is crazy, I just have to get out of here. I think I’m getting cabin fever." He gets up and turns the lights back on, "I’m going to take a quick shower. Thanks Sydney." Steve walks towards the bathroom with a clean set of clothes in his hands. I start for the door, “Absolutely Steve, push the call light if you need anything else ok?" I am halfway out the door when I hear him say okay.

I have more questions than answers now. No blood at the scene? How is that possible? As a male he has about 10 to 12 pints of blood in his body at any given time. The chart said they had to transfuse seven pints of blood in the emergency room. Then they had to give plasma to help his blood clot. Yesterday I gave him two more pints of blood. His body didn't produce enough of his own to sustain him. That just doesn't make sense.

All of a sudden the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. I whip around fast enough that James leans back to avoid my hair again. "So, how's our star patient tonight, Nurse Sydney?" he asks with a grin. I can't help my heart rate when looking at him. He's just so sexy. His grin gets bigger. "Hello James, what can I help you with?" I ask. He looks over my shoulder, "Just came to see Steve. I've taken quite a liking to him." He looks back into my eyes. He has no smile on his face now, he looks deathly serious. For some reason my instinct tells me not to back down. This man has to be almost six feet tall and full of muscles. I don’t care, there is no way I am backing down first. We glare at each other for another couple of seconds before he pulls away. That distinct smile spreads over his face, "Hmm," he whispers, "interesting." Then he walks around me and knocks on Steve's door. Jerk doesn't even look back before he walks in. I seriously need mental help.

Jenna got sick and had to go home early, so I end up walking to my car alone again tonight. My nerves are on edge as I scan the parking lot. I look for anything suspicious but don’t see anything. All of a sudden there are footsteps right behind me. I spin around with my keys in my fist ready to attack. I see a shadow where I thought a person would have been. I can't see through it. What I can see is huge, almost seven feet tall. The outline is the shape of a man but much bigger. Then it moves towards me. I run back toward the entrance when I feel hands push me on the ground. I get up screaming and run the other way towards my car. Right when I think I am about to make it a rush of nausea flows over me. I feel like my brain isn’t functioning correctly. My vision gets all fuzzy and then the shadow is right in front of me. When I run into it I feel like I hit a brick wall. I fall on the concrete as my head continues to spin. I can feel my keys still in my hand but I don’t think they will help me with this. I jump up again to make another run for it when someone grabs me around my waist. I scream but the words are ripped right out of my mouth as I am thrown through the air. I land in the grass. I try to get up but the dizziness keeps me down. All I can see is the trees and I know I am at the edge of the parking lot. I try to stay awake but I lose that battle as darkness overcomes me.
