 Chapter Seven

As soon as Sydney and the girls leave I get restless. My shift is over so I know I can follow but I don’t trust myself. With the way Sydney acted I know I’ll just go after her. I smile to myself. I take it she likes me. I guess she decided she was going to put some pressure on me to make me choose. Worked pretty damn well. I didn't know Lisa was her friend. They didn't even work on the same floor. I needed a distraction from Sydney and I thought I could get that with Lisa. Maybe get a little action as well. I didn't know she would invite all her friends and they'd make a night out of it. Then Sydney walked in and I almost lost focus. The point is to get away from her, not spend time together. I can kiss all my good intentions goodbye. No way I will last if she decides she wants me. I barely lasted a whole minute with her damn, sexy foot two inches from my dick. I can’t believe I forgot how determined she is. I can feel my smile worm its way back onto my face. I revisit the first time she tried to punch me. I realize now that if she didn’t surprise me like that, I probably wouldn't have stopped. I would have taken what I needed from her and moved on, like I always do. Well, I say that now. There's something about her that is different...

My brain stops in mid thought when I feel my whole body go cold. I've never told anybody this, not even Cahal. When certain rogues begin feeding my body goes numb with cold. As soon as I feel this I jump the counter and take off outside. All I can think of is that Sydney left through that door. If he even thinks about touching her I am going to rip off his fucking head! As soon as I step into the warm air I smell her blood. My whole body goes rigid. I can’t describe the feeling I have, knowing he has her. He has my Sydney. I hear a dark chuckle as I leap into the tree above the building. I see droplets of her blood on the leaves. I notice that the blood had an almost luminescent quality to it that I have never seen before. It is now very easy to see where the trail is leading. Without any thought to look human, I scale the trees searching for her.

I know the rogue is close. The blood leads down to the beach so I drop back onto the concrete in the back of the pub. I hear her whisper my name and it drives me insane. The scent of her blood is right behind me. I whip around coming face to face with her. My heart stops in joy because she is alive. Just as I realize something is off about her, she attacks. She jumps at me, clawing and hitting. She steps into the light of the moon and I immediately notice her eyes are pitch black. My shock reveals my weakness and she uses that to her advantage. She jabs her fingers toward my eye, so I have to duck and whip around her. I hear growling from her that shocks me into place. For that I get a kick square in the face. Holy shit! She just kicked above her own head! I duck under her leg as she attempts to do it again. I don't want to hurt her so I have to deflect her hits without doing any damage. My fangs descend from the scent of her blood and the adrenaline of the hunt. I keep trying to regain my focus before she catches me off guard again. When she goes for my throat I grab her outstretched arm and spin her around with her back to me. I get a hold of her other arm as she reaches around. She starts jerking back and forth, biting and clawing, trying to get herself out of my arms. I am barely able to block her heel as it comes a little too close to my balls. She lets out another feral growl and I hear the laugh again. This time I am able to pinpoint his location. It came from the roof of the pub to my right. I know I have to get her out of harm’s way before the vamp gets behind me.

I wrap my right arm around her neck with just enough pressure for my forearm to push against her throat. Not too much to crush her larynx but just enough to knock her out. She finally goes limp. I slide her to the ground in the nearby bushes. I see the wound to her arm is still bleeding and know I have to hold pressure to stop it. I wrap my hand around the spot and hold on while summoning my full vampire. Even with my enhanced abilities I still can't see the bastard. While scanning the shadows for any movement, I remembered Sydney's eyes. They were black, like a vampire. She was being controlled. It's the only option. She's strong but she's not as strong as an immortal. She was still bleeding so she wasn't drained for the change. I don't understand the motive here and that's what is so disconcerting.
