Chapter Ten

“How is that possible father?” I ask. I have no idea what he means. Nothing rises from the dead. Believe me, I have seen a lot of things. There are no ghosts. Once dead, things move onto another life. There is no coming back. I hear my Cahal sighs softly before he responds, “I couldn’t stop his killing so I left. I did not want to battle him and I saw no other way. I believe he stayed close to me though. I never felt alone, there was always someone watching. Soon after I came across a beautiful woman one night. We had a fast romance and I decided to change her to become one of us. We spent a few years together before Adhamh re-entered my life. He took one look at Ailis and it was obvious they were anamchara. Even though I felt strongly for her, and her for I, I did not take it poorly. It was what it was. Again we separated and it was about fifty years before I saw either one of them again. Unfortunately Ailis' life ended suddenly. I heard she paid a Drac assassin to kill her. Adhamh found pieces of her floating down the river Mourne. Adhamh found out by tracking her ash trail to the river’s edge.

He was never the same after that. Not quite a year later he massacred a local village killing them all. The neighboring towns blamed the Black Death. I was the one to find him and bring him in. He was the first creature sent to the Underground.” I have no words. The Underground is a mass of black, rolling earth that disintegrates all that it comes in contact with. No one can survive the Underground. I ask, “How is this possible? Nothing is impervious to the Underground.” Athair is silent once more. I know this has to be a shock to him. He never once told me about these people. I can only assume he hid this on purpose. Instead of answering me he says, “You need to come home. Bring your sister, your friend, and your anamchara. You will not be safe otherwise. She will not be safe.” Usually I recognize his decision to change the subject but not this time. Not when it puts my Sydney at risk. “Why did Ailis pay an assassin to kill her?" I ask. "Ah, my son, that is the question, isn't it? She sent a messenger requesting my presence a few months before her demise. She said, other than Adhamh, I was the only other ancient one she knew of. She said about a decade after they came together she started getting depressed and reclusive. When she would talk to him about it he would get very angry and slaughter local humans. She said they began sharing emotions. Their emotions and feelings were interchangeable. She said she felt evil coming from him. She, as a result, felt evil. She asked about ways to part from an amanchara. I knew of none, part from death. She nodded, as though she already knew this answer and needed confirmation. Unfortunately I did not think on it further. A few months later she was dead."

I cannot breathe. This is just another reason why anamchara’s are almost nonexistent. “James, I can tell this human belongs to you. I can feel it through our bond. I can also feel that the ritual is not complete. You will remain weak until you complete the steps.” I perk up at this, “Steps? What steps?” I ask. He chuckles, “You each must taste each other’s blood. It cannot be a small amount my son. You must drink.” My body shuddered in longing. I cannot drink from her without killing her. I will not change her without her permission. As much as I want to make this choice for her, we have enough going against us. Cahal interrupts my thoughts, “You are incomplete, are you not?” I shake my head again. He just knows so much. I relay all the mishaps beginning with Steve gaining his memories back. Again he says, “You are incomplete without her. You must finish your task. There will be much I cannot explain that you will learn on your own. Every anamchara bond is different.” He pauses, “I cannot wait to welcome her into the family.”
