He stared at me blankly, lips parted and hands still resting on my shoulders. I could almost swear I heard a slight gasp escape his lips. Not like a dramatic one you'd see in a novella, but one like you'd just been insulted. His hands slowly dropped from my shoulders, to his sides. I furrowed my brows at him as he slowly stepped back and began to think about what I said.

His reaction was a tad bit overdramatic, but thats coming from the king of overdramatized reactions.

"Why would you think that?" He asked me.

I watched him as he bent down, picked up his beanie. He rolled it up and tightly held onto it as he waited for me to respond.

"because you keep saying just kidding."

"You dont get it do you?... Just kidding is code word you shit head. It means I love you" He stopped wringing the hat and put it on my head. When he put it on me he pulled it down to cover my eyes, so I had to put my head back to look at him.

I wish the hat covered my cheeks. I know I'm bright red. I feel like a complete idiot. All this time he's been saying he loves me. Fuck. I'm so oblivious it hurts.

After adjusting the hat on my head, I lowered my gaze in embarrassment. I just stared at my shoes, trying to avoid eye contact with him. He clearly didnt like that since he gently lifted my chin so that I could look into his stupidly bright eyes. The corners of his mouth tugged upward as he took his hand away from my chin.

"Well uh...why didnt you ever tell me that?" I asked, sounding incredibly flustered.

Honestly though, if he would have just told me that in the first place, things would have been easier.

"I was hoping you'd remember." He shrugged.

Remember what? Is there more to be explained? Colby, why is this so complicated.

"Remember what?" I asked. I ruffled my own hair a bit, trying to hide my still flushed face as much as possible. Sadly, my hairs pretty short, so hiding behind it isnt much of an option.

"That night..." He trailed off, milking the conversation. Why cant he just come out and say it?

I dramatically rolled my eyes at him which for some reason only made him laugh under his breath. I'm not sure whats funny, but ok.

"Stop dragging this out and just tell me!" I whined. I held onto his arm and shook it as I spoke, just like an annoying child would when trying to get your attention.

"Ok, Ok." He pulled his arm away from me. "That night... The night of the party. Do you know why you couldnt rememeber that night? You couldnt remember it because you had to go and get high because you're stupid like that. After I realized that, I dragged you out of the party and was driving you home. The car ride was deafeningly silent, but you broke that silence. You told me about high school and you told me you loved me. You even told me you didnt think you'd remember what you said, and you were right. You forgot, but I couldnt. You told me that everything you said would be like saying just kidding. You said that if I loved you, to say just kidding. Every chance I got, every time you left It open to say, I said it." He explained. As he spoke he became more serious. The raw emotion in his voice sent chills down my back. Like ice freezing my spine. "Sam I..."

He awkwardly leaned forward and pecked my cheek. "Just kidding." He seriously was just now awkward. He can flirt and kiss all around my shoulder blade, but after we're finally about to get somewhere, he gets awkward.

Instead of making fun of him for being so damn awkward, I just smiled at him and cupped his cheek. He nuzzled into my hand. Eyes closed, and a giant smile on his face.

The room grew silent. He was probably waiting for me to confess my undying love to him through a just kidding as well, but I chose to cherish the sweet moment while it lasted. My hand dropped from his face to his shoulder, so I could tug him forward and wrap my arms around him. I planted a kiss on his cheek and let my lips linger for a moment before I buried my head in his neck, and smiled to myself.

"Just kidding, Bolby"
