Ever since I was four years old, me, Fin, Sandy, and Mom lived in our cave on Hoth. Before that we lived on our ship the Meridian. That when Dad was still alive. I remembered the good times. The times when Dad was alive, Sandy wasn't so bossy, and mom wasn't such a worry wart. All she did was worry about us. That's why we were not telling her about 'the base'. I had found it the day before and that particular morning me and Fin were going to ditch the girls and check it out.
I woke up that morning in my bed of taun taun hair carpets. I remembered the day we made them. We found hundreds of dead taun taun laying in the snow fields. Dad said they had frozen to death. That was also the day that Dad died from the Wampa attack. I pushed the thought out of my head and started to get ready. I pulled my black shirt on and my leather jacket. My Dad had a jacket just like it. Mom said I could have it when I grew into it. After I quietly got dressed I went over to Fins carpets and shook him awake.
"Wake up Fin! Let's go!" I whispered in his ear.
Fin groaned.
"Come on Fin you said you would go with me! Remember?"
"Ok, hold on.....just let me wake up."
"You are awake." Ha! That was a pretty good come back.
"Smarty." He reached up and smacked me in the face! I wasn't hat hard, but still hard enough to make my cheek turn red and my eyes water. I scowl at him. If we weren't trying to sneak out I would have screamed at him or told mom. I knew he was just joking but, he still makes me angry. 90% of the time he's my best friend, 10% of the time he just picking on me. I guess I didn't mind it that much. He was my only friend after all. When we stepped outside, there was barely enough light to even see.
"Stay here, I'm gonna go get a lantern." Fin ran inside.
It was a little scary out there all alone. In the distance I could see the pink sun peeking out above mountain. I sat down and watched as it rose, making a pinkish red shimmer on the icy snow. What's taking Fin so long? I wondered. A few minutes went by and he still was inside. Maybe Mom caught him. As the sun rose, the ice started to melt a little bit. The water went through my pants causing my butt to freeze. I got up and started to walk up the hill towards the base. I'll just get a look at it while Fin is inside. I told myself. I climbed up the hill. When reached the top, the sun shined in my eyes almost blinding me. I had never experienced so much light in my life.
It was beautiful.
It was paradise.
I wondered what it would be like without a sun. We would have no chance to live. All my life I though my existence was pointless. I thought I would never have a chance to be a hero. That day I realized that as long as there's light I still had a chance.
"Poe! What are doing?" Fin yelled to me from the bottom of the hill.
"What took you so long?" I was a little angry.
"I packed us some food." Fin held up a bag and smiled, completely ignoring the frown on my face.
"Let's go." I said to him. I was glad I had a head start, because he quickly caught up to me. When Fin reached the top of the hill he gasped.
"Wow! That amazing!" His jaw dropped. "I can't believe we are so close to it and we've never seen it until now!"
I had never thought of that before.
"I usually go the other way when hunting."
"Why?" I asked him.
"Wampa's."
"Oh..." A shiver went down my spine. Hopefully we won't encounter any today. I thought.
We continued on towards the base, taking our time as we went.
Raarrrrgggg.
"What the hell was that?!" Fin usually only cursed when he was very mad or very terrified.
"Don't ask me!"
I saw something coming over the hill towards us.
"Run!" Fin shouted at me.
We both ran towards the base at top speed. The Wampa ran after us. We ran into base not even bothering to look around. Fin ran strait to the weaponry room and I followed behind him. There were boxes of guns on the floor. Fin picked one for himself and gave one to me as well. I had never shot a gun before.
Fin understood my confused look and explained to me how to use it. Cock, aim at the heart, and pull the trigger. Simple. I told myself even though I was absolutely terrified.
Me and Fin shot at the hairy creature until it was dead. Just when we thought we were finished, two others came charging in.
"Son of a-grrrrr." Fin growled and cursed to himself.
We shot at the others. Even though it was murder, I actually liked the action of battle. Maybe I do have a future. Maybe I will do something helpful. I told myself.* * *
"We should take these home." Fin suggested to me as he admired one of the fighters.
"No, not yet. We should fix em up first." I told him.
"Who made you the boss?"
"I found this place, you should be grateful I brought you be at all."
Fin didn't answer which meant I just won the 'battle'.
We continued to explore the vast hangar. I started to work on one of the three fighters, while Fin went to get more weapons for his hunting. The base was a mess. I didn't know much about the rebels or any of the wars, but Fin told me that Darth Vader and his troops had been the ones responsible for the mess.
"Poe, come here!" Fin shouted to me from the control room.
I slid myself out from under the ship and headed down the hall way towards where I heard his voice. Most of the walls were demolished, and the doors broken. I stepped into a large room full of panels and switches and such. I was overwhelmed, having no clue what most of them did. I walked over towards Fin. He was sitting next to a shut down, white protocol droid.
"Can we fix it?" I asked him. The droid was quite beat up so I was a little doubtful, but I was hopeful as well. The droid would definitely come in handy.
"I think so. Go and get the tools from the hangar."
I walked out of the control room and through the hall and into the hangar. I finally have a purpose in life. I thought to myself as I pulled my jacket closer to me while the cold wind blew through my brown hair. As long as there's light, I've got a chance. I smiled to myself and picked up the tools.
