there was a girl four and afraid
awake all night while her mother partied
alone all day while her mother slept
there was a girl six and angry
picked on and isolated
pushed into rose bushes and feeling worthless
there was a girl eight and betrayed
her mother was behind bars
her mind began to imprison her also
there was a girl ten and proud
her little brother was born so she wasnt alone
but happiness never lasts
there was a girl twelve and broken
red lines formed and she confessed she was gay
people teased so she hid every true part of herself
there was a girl fourteen and destroyed
endless weeks in hospitals but hiding hundreds of pills in her room
when tears formed everyone averted their eyes
there was a girl sixteen and alone
no place to call home
now she thinks why bother anymore
