  Five of the 14 basic consonants can double themselves to make five double consonants as follows:

             ㄲ,     ㄸ,     ㅃ,     ㅆ,     ㅉ

  The double consonants are distinguished by an explosive tense in their pronunciation.






  1. ㄱ + ㄱ = ㄲ ( ssahng - gee - yok )

" ㄲ "  sounds somewhat like the French  " c "  in the word crayon.

              꼬 리   kkoh ri  ( tail )







  2. ㄷ + ㄷ = ㄸ ( ssahng - dee - gut )

" ㄸ "  sounds somewhat like the French  " t "  in the word table.

          딸 기   ttal gi  ( strawberry)







  3. ㅂ + ㅂ = ㅃ ( ssahng - bee - up )

" ㅃ "  sounds somewhat like the French  " p "  in the word Paris.

오 빠  oh ppa  ( a girl's elder brother)







  4. ㅅ + ㅅ = ㅆ ( ssahng - see - oht )

" ㅆ "  sounds somewhat like the French  " s "  in the word saint.

             쌀  ssal  ( uncooked rice)







  5. ㅈ + ㅈ = ㅉ  ( ssahng  - jee - ut )

" ㅉ "  sounds somewhat like the French  " z "  in the word Zeitung.

     공 짜  gong zzah ( free of charge )





  Of the 5 double consonants,  only two , ㄲ  and  ㅆ  are used as a butchim. 

        깎 다    kkak  dag  ( to cut )   

        있 다    Ett  dah ( to exist)
