The following few days Jess had been really down. During music class at school, we all sat on top of our desks, played our instruments and sang along with Mrs. Edmunds who sang and played the piano. Jess didn't sit on his desk, he sat in it with his hands folded, leaning his head on um. He was always looking miserable, sat by himself on the bus with his head up against the window. I didn't feel comfortable sitting next to him, I didn't think it was a good idea. We avoided each other and Terabithia for a few days. I felt it was best to keep distant from Jess.
A few days of that, then everything went back to normal when Jess passed me in the halls and tossed me a folded piece of paper and didn't look back as he kept walking. I opened the paper to find a drawing he drew of Terabithia, he and I fighting off the giant troll with the words "giant troll hunting season begins today!" at the bottom. I looked back in the direction Jess went after examining the drawing and smiled.
It was a Friday after school and I told my parents I'd be back in a little bit. I sprinted all the way to the rope and saw Jess standing on the other side. "Jess! Jess!" I called, grasping the rope and swinging myself across. I jumped off and ran up to Jess. He stood there holding a small black and white puppy with dangly ears and fur covering his big black eyes. "Oh hi! Look at you!" I cooed, taking the dog from Jess' arms. "That is your very own certified giant troll hunter" Jess explained, taking off his sweatshirt. "He's for me?" I gasped in happiness. "Yeah, and he just took a giant pee all over my sweatshirt" Jess laughed. "Wow Jess...thank you" I softened my voice and wrapped my arm that wasn't holding the dog around Jess. "We'll call him Prince Terrien; Giant Troll Hunter Extraordinaire" I decided, setting the little dog down at our feet. "P.T. for short" I turned to face Jess, a smile still glued on my face. "I think he smells a troll, come on!" I shouted to Jess, following P.T. deeper into the grounds of Terabithia.
Jess and I hurried after P.T. who led us right to where we needed to be. "Leslie!" Jess shouted, I turned to see a giant troll behind us. "Run!" Jess screamed. Jess, P.T. and I ran as fast as we could. The giant troll took huge steps behind us. We ran as fast as we could to avoid getting crushed. We ran as far as we could before Jess collapsed. "I think we lost it" I panted. "Leslie..." Jess pressed faintly. I turned around to see the giant troll standing in front of the sun, rays of it shooting through the cracks. "Run!" we screamed and followed P.T. all the way back to the rope. "It's gone, we lost it" Jess could hardly get the words out.
I grasped the rope and swung across back to regular land. Jess hiked P.T. up in his jacket and swung across with him. It began to rain, we ran all the way home. "Maybe we could come back tomorrow?" I suggested as we ran through the rain. "I can't, I got chores" Jess explained. "How bout the next day?" I asked. "We go to church" Jess explained. "Ooh can I come?" I asked. "You'd hate it" Jess laughed. "No, I think it'd be pretty cool" I disagreed. "Well, girls can't wear pants" he argued. "I've got dresses, Jess" I laughed. "You in a dress? That'd be a sight" Jess smirked. "Okay, see ya!" I smiled. "See ya!" Jess responded as I turned down the path to my farm.
