Jealousy

The sand is warm beneath my feet and I push my hair back, my fingers holding my sandals. I smile when I see Keo, his hands throwing and catching a football.

"Football?" I grin, his head turning.

"Gotta get buff somehow, Claire Bear," he grins, his huge biceps on show as he flexes.

"So you and Styles are going out now, huh?" he asks, my shoulders shrugging.

"I guess," I say, his arm hooking around my waist. He hugs me and I hug him back, recalling all our hugs when I'd see him after a weekend away. He is a brother to me.

"He's a good guy, Claire. It's a shame what happened to his last girlfriend," he says, my eyebrows frowning.

"What do you mean?" I ask, his arm throwing the ball before turning to me.

"She wrecked him. She was a flat out bitch and he took a beating. You should have seen the mark on his face from her nails," he sighs, shaking his head before catching the ball.

Harry was hurt by a girl? I don't know whether to laugh or feel bad for him.

"Before you think Styles is a pussy, he took the hit because it was either that or she'd never leave. He would never hit a woman and that's respectable. I've been hit by girls before," he explains, my head nodding.

"Where is she now?" I ask, his hand throwing the ball. He holds up a finger and wraps his arm around my shoulders, our eyes locking.

"She has moved on to worse men. And when I say that, she's a stripper. I only know that 'cause Jack's bachelor party was at the place she works. She treated Harry like shit and he deserves a girl like you. And I think you deserve him," he says, my eyebrow lifting.

"Now, I'm not just saying that because you kind of already are, but I knew there was always something there with you two. He was very protective over you," he explains, my head turning away.

"Really? Is it noticeable?" I ask, not really seeing Harry's protective side.

"Oh yeah. Did you not see his attitude when we saw each other?" he asks, smiling at me. Then I recall and totally see it.

"Oh my fuck," I groan, throwing my head back.

"You two are so cute," he grins, poking my pouted cheek.

"Shut up, Keo," I say, his hand squeezing my shoulder. He lets go and faces me, grabbing my upper arms.

"All I want is to see little Claire Bear happy. You deserve it after your shitty dad," he says, making me laugh.

But what I don't expect next is two strong hands gripping my waist and tugging me behind them.

"Stay away from my girl," Harry says, his hands shoving Keo's chest.

"Harry, stop," I groan, Keo standing tall.

"Man, I don't want Claire Bear like that," he says, Harry tensing.

"Don't be touching her like you do," Harry grits, my hand tugging his and pulling him into me.

"Bye Claire," Keo grins, making it known he was right about Harry being protective.

Harry tugs me close to him and he grabs my hair, his hands soft as he brushes my cheek. It's clear he was just in the water, his curls damp.

"Are you mad at me?" I ask, his eyes serious and his eyebrows furrowed together.

"No, I'm just..." he sighs, my lips curving up at him.

"You're jealous," I grin, his eyes looking into mine. But I see a little smirk come over his lips and I laugh, his head shaking. He wraps his arms around me and I grin, his strong arms keeping me close.

"You want to go get something to eat?" he asks, my shoulders shrugging.

"Sure," I say, his hand taking mine. We walk up to the surf shop and order chips and salsa, his hand holding mine.

"How do you know Keo?" he asks, my lips curving.

"Our dads were good friends so naturally we were too. Then my dad started his shit and I was at Keo's a lot. He's like a brother to me," I explain, his head nodding. I bite my lip, not knowing whether to mention his ex. Then he looks at me and I just want to know.

"He told me something," I blurt, Harry's eyes remaining focused on me. "About you."

"What? How could he possibly know anything about me?" he asks, and I look down.

"Were, um, were you ever abused by...an ex?" I ask, and his face drops when I mention that. It must be true.

"It was a while ago," he says, but seeing how sad he is makes my heart clench. I don't think I could laugh.

"Why would someone do that to you?" I ask, his hand running through his hair.

"Claire, our relationship was shit and we were constantly fighting. I broke up with her and she clawed my face with her nails. I was helpless because I would never hurt her. I can't physically hurt a woman," he explains, my eyes looking over his face. I see a few faint lines from scars and I cup his cheek, brushing my thumb over the marks. He closes his eyes and I let him go, getting him to look at me.

"When he told me, I wanted to laugh. But I don't think I could. You're very respectable," I tell him, his lips curving.

"That's what I shoot for," he grins, my lips parting into a smile.

We finish up our chips and salsa and he walks with me back to the house. He holds my hand and I look up at him, his head leaning down. Our lips meet and I part, walking up the stairs to my house.

"Wait," Harry calls, my head turning to look at him. He runs up the stairs and grabs my waist, kissing me again.

"You doing anything tonight?" he whispers, my head shaking. He smirks and pecks my lips again.

"My house?" he asks, my lips smirking.

"We'll see," I tease, letting him go and allowing him to watch me walk away.
