Lunchtime. Arguably my favourite time of the day -- besides the food, I got the chance to catch up -- aka gossip -- with my friends.
Joy and Yulissa, my closest friends from theatre and drama class, rushed up to meet me in the queue for food. Joy held up her sparkly phone to show the time. "Where have you been?"
"Sorry," I apologised meekly. "I had to go to the office to do something first."
As in, handing in that late slip.
Yulissa took it in her stride. "I was just telling Joy how I finally found a product in my local drug store that calmed my curls -- finally can afford frizzy-less hair."
I smiled. "You know I always love your hair."
Yulissa huffed. "You should see me trying to get ready for cheer."
We made our way to our usual table in the cafeteria, where it was roaring with laughter and chatter. Justin and his friends were also there, talking about some sort of melody that could be turned into a full song.
Joy was staring right at him. "Whoa, Justin. Did you come from a party or something?"
Justin turned towards her, levelling his ocean blue gaze that was accentuated by smoky eyeshadow at her. "Or something."
"He showed up full Adam Lambert to class and shocked all the teachers," Aaron, the guy sitting next to Justin, chortled.
"You look good," Yulissa jumped in. "You would suit Danny in Grease, honestly."
"Wait, what?" I cut in.
"Yulissa's speculating that this year's musical will be Grease," Joy explained. "Will you even be joining though, Justin?"
Justin shook his head ruefully. "My schedule is packed, sorry fam."
There were several groans from the other theatre kids further down the table.
"We're losing people every year."
"The rest of y'all better show up."
"Wait, that means no more #Julani?"
Heads turned towards me, and I hoped my blush didn't show. Justin chuckled. "No #Julani, unfortunately. Also, what's up with shipping main leads together? Why does no one ship the others -- like Monique Coleman and Corbin Bleu?"
A chorus of 'ooh's and 'ah's rose from the crowd, making Yulissa and Hafiz shift in their seats. I couldn't help but giggle a little -- the cast from last year's school musical, High School Musical, was pretty tight knit, and we were on easy teasing terms with each other. Justin was casted as Troy, and I was Gabriella -- so naturally, we got shipped together. People still didn't let us live down the kiss scene too. I glanced once, very quickly, at Justin's lips at that thought, secretly remembering the times the kisses felt all too real.
"Anyways," Yulissa cleared her throat. "IF it is Grease this year, who would y'all go for?"
Joy cut her gaze to mine. "Are you going for Sandy, Lani?"
Everyone at the table seemed to hold their breaths. Usually, the main leads casted in previous school musicals would not be casted as main leads in a consecutive year, to give other students a shot.
"No, probably not," I conceded with a smile. "I've always loved Jan's personality. Maybe I'll go for her or Frenchy."
"Or you could try Betty Rizzo," Yulissa suggested. "It'll be a funny parallel to Vanessa Hudgens."
Aaron gestured to Joy. "Why, are you going for Sandy?"
There was another pause at the table. Joy nodded a little hesitantly.
