A few weeks later...

Barb and I have been looking for apartments and failing. Every place we look at is a shit hole but we can't afford much. Barb is starting college soon and I'm going to be a full time league member soon. Leaving no time for either of us to really get a steady job to pay any bills.

Mom keeps telling me she will pay for my apartment but I don't want her to. I want to be able to pay for me and my girlfriend and provide a steady income and some sort of a normal life for us. Because one day we want to have a family and more pets and maybe to get out of Gotham. But for any of that we need money.

I may have to put aside my dream of being a league member to have a job in the city. I haven't brought this up to Barb knowing she would make me go to the league but I want us to be happy and independent. And if letting Barb go to school makes her happy then I'm happy. I don't want to listen to her bullshit to me that her getting a job instead of school would be okay because I know it would break her heart.

We have just barely saved up enough money for our own apartment and we really want to stay near my moms. Her dad has been sort of an ass lately but I tolerate him because Barb wants me to. I wish I had come from a family with money sometimes or maybe grown up in a better town but Gotham is my home. My moms have definitely made it a home.

Today me and Barb have plans to go look at a couple more apartments, and if these two are a bust then we are going to take a break from looking for a while. I planned on picking her up from her dad's where she was packing up the rest of her things so she could move out.

Somewhere around noon I get to the apartment and knock on the door. Her dad answers. "Barbara your friend is here." I try to hide my anger as I waited for Barb.

Barb comes running from her room and to the door. She closes it behind her and jumps into my arms. "I can't stand him sometimes baby." She says holding onto me tight. "I love him but he has been such a shitty person lately. I miss my mom at times like this." Tears begin escaping her eyes.

I walk her over to the stairs and sit down with her in my lap holding her. "I know." I say and kiss the top of her head. "You're moving out now. You won't have to deal with him everyday anymore. And as for your mom, I know I never met her but I'm sure she would be so proud of you. You are the sweetest but also most badass woman in the world and I love you and I'm sure she does too."

Barb smiles at me. "You are so sweet baby." I wipe away her tears and kiss her forehead. "I have a good feeling about today. I think we might find the right place." She says as we stand up and begin walking down the stairs.

We begin walking to the first apartment of the day and the building seems really nice. The top looks like a clock tower and it's beautiful. Barb and I got into the elevator and went to the top floor where we were meant to meet the realtor. The woman smiled at us and showed us around. There was one bedroom and the rest of the apartment was all basically one room.

Barb pulled me aside at the end. "Babe this place is perfect." She pulls me over to the window which is also the face of the clock. "It overlooks the whole city and the bedroom is just like yours and I really love this place baby." She smiles.

I walk up to the realtor. "We'll take it." I smile back at Barb.

The realtor smiles at me and gets all of the paperwork together. After another hour of signing all of the necessary paperwork we headed out to lunch. I treated Barb to a fancy lunch at McDonalds because we were pretty broke. I played it up to be like a fancy date.

"Let me seat you miss." I smile. "May I interest you in a happy meal or maybe a cheeseburger? Our special today is a chicken sandwich with a McFlurry." I keep a straight face as I say all of this with a terrible French accent.

Barb giggles and pulls me down into a kiss. "I love you beautiful." She smiles. "And that special sounds pretty good I think I'll take that."

I smile and order our food before returning to the booth that Barb had picked out before. When I bring the food back I set it up like it was a fancy restaurant. She looks at me and then picks up her sandwich and just begins eating like a slob. I giggle and eat my food.

About an hour later I head back to my moms house to borrow there car so I could start bringing our stuff to the new place. We made sure we could begin moving our stuff in right away. Most of Barb's things are already at my Moms' house but the rest is going to be brought over by her father.

By the end of the day we had our bed set up and an apartment full of boxes to unpack. At around 8 we both collapsed onto the bed. I turn towards Barb and kiss her "We did it." I smile.

She straddles me. "You want to break the place in?" She chuckles and kisses me.

"I would love nothing more." I smile and pull her down and kiss her deeply.
