Mother's Day: Really?

So I see my Facebook and other social media sites filled with countless selfies of people with their mothers and with sentimental words about thanking their Mom.

The question that I thought of all day – do you really celebrate the presence of your mother in your life?

Do you help her out when she is doing chores all day? Or you are too busy on the internet, phone or television?

Do you massage her feet when she is tired at night or you are too busy watching a late night movie?

Do you try your best to give her a break so that she can rest instead of being lazy all day?

It's a sad story to see many of us would remember our mothers on the so called Mother's Day but what about the rest of the year?

That is the beauty of Islam it doesn't tell us to appreciate and love our mother once a year but all throughout our lives until our last breath.

Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: "A man came to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said, 'O Messenger of Allaah, who among the people is most deserving of my good companionship?' He said, 'Your mother.' The man asked, 'Then who?' He said, 'Your mother.' He asked, then who?' He said, 'Your mother.' He asked, 'Then who?' He said, 'Your father.'"

Why does Islam gives such importance to a mother? I never understood this until I became a mother myself. The aches and pains of pregnancy, the harshness of giving birth, endless days and night spent in taking care of young children and eventually being patient when they argue back to you over something they are angry at.

"And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and kind to his parents. His mother bears him with hardship. And she brings him forth with hardship..." [al-Ahqaaf 46:15]

It is important we take care of our mother. This duty as a Muslim is a more essential than even going on jihad.

'Abd-Allaah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'Aas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) said: "A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and asked him for permission to participate in jihaad. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to him, 'Are your parents alive?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Then your jihaad is with them.'" (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2842; Muslim, 2549).

We can never repay for what the struggle our mothers have faced when they were raising us. But what we can try is to become better son or daughter which will not only appease our mother but also please our Creator.

May Allah bless us to become pious, caring and obedient children of our mothers. Ameen.
